Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team fell 71-58 to Simpson on Wednesday afternoon in its A-R-C opener. The Kohawks trailed by just three at the break but the Storm outscored them 34-24 in the second half of action to pick up the victory. The loss drops Coe to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference while Simpson improves to 4-1 and 1-1 in the league.
Coe and Simpson battled back-and-forth in the early going, but the Kohawks took an early lead thanks to a pair of 3s from
Adam McDermott and a basket from
Austin Roth. Trailing 13-6 with 13:50 left in the period, the Storm ripped off a 13-3 run to take a 19-15 lead with just over nine minutes left in the half.
Ivan Morrow ended the stretch with a jumper to pull the Kohawks with two points, kickstarting a mini-run for Coe which saw them outscore the Storm 9-2 over a 3:32 stretch to regain a 24-21 lead with a little over five minutes left in the half. The squads would trade buckets for the remainder of the frame as the Storm hit a last-second jumper to take a 37-34 lead into the break.
Simpson exploded out of the halftime break, ripping off a 16-10 over the first six-plus minutes, extending the lead to nine points. The Storm run continued after a break in the action as Conor Riordan hit another 3 to push their lead back to double-digits with 12:35 left in the game.
The Storm continued to control the game stretching their lead 16 points, behind a 16-9 in the next 9:18 including six more points from Riordan. The Simpson lead climbed into the teen's during the run but Coe managed to chip away at some of the deficit prior to the final horn, scoring five of the final nine points of the contest.
Up next: The Kohawks return to action on Saturday when they host Luther in another A-R-C contest at 4 p.m.
