Men’s Basketball Locks Up Two-Seed in A-R-C Tournament with Fourth-Straight Win

DECORAH, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team ended the regular season with a 76-60 victory over Luther College, securing the second overall seed in the A-R-C Tournament which begins on Tuesday. The Kohawks, who earned a bye in the opening round, trailed by one to the Norse at the half but hot shooting from downtown led them past Luther in the second. Coe ends the regular season 16-9 overall, its best mark since a 16-10 record in 2014-15. The Kohawks finished 11-5 in the A-R-C, a game ahead of Loras, and four games behind #6 Nebraska Wesleyan which earned the top seed in the league tournament.

Three seniors reached double figures for the Kohawks on Saturday as Austin Roth led the effort, scoring 21 points while adding seven rebounds. Adam McDermott, who had 18 points and Josh Schmitt, who added 11 also eclipsed the mark for Coe, which shot 14-of-33 from downtown and 28-of-58 overall.

The Kohawks opened the game on fire, scoring the first eight points of the contest thanks to buckets from Roth and McDermott. Luther and Coe then traded buckets for nearly five minutes as Coe held a six-point lead with 14:54 remaining in the opening period. The Norse started to cut into the deficit, using a 9-2 stretch over the next four-plus minutes to take a one-point lead midway through the half. The teams continued to battle for the remainder of the first half as neither team was able to take control of the contest but the Kohawks scored final two points of the frame to make it 33-32 Luther at the break.

Coe picked up the pace early in the second half, outscoring Luther 19-8 in the first 4:50 of the period to retake the lead and control of the game. During the run, Coe hit six 3s on its seven baskets including two from Schmitt. The Kohawks stayed hot from the floor for a majority of the second half, building upon the lead en route to the come from behind victory.

Up next: Coe, the number two overall seed in the A-R-C tournament earned a bye in the first round and will resume action on Thursday in the semi-final against the winner of Tuesday night's 3/6 seed game between Loras and Wartburg. The game will be on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
