MEMPHIS, Tn. - The Coe College baseball team bounced back on Sunday morning with a 3-1 victory over #2 Webster in its final game of the Rhodes College Invite. The Kohawks racked up 12 hits in the game while holding Webster to just nine hits and one run. The win is Coe's first of the 2020 campaign, improving its record to 1-2 while Webster, which reached the College World Series last year, drops to 1-2.
The Kohawks had a strong offensive showing, after two games of struggles, recording 12 hits over nine innings.
Riley LeGrand, Jordan Kaplan and
Daniel Berger recorded RBIs for the Kohawks while
Luke Smailes was 3-of-4 at the dish. Coe starting pitcher
Jack Greene went 6 innings, scattering seven hits while allowing just one unearned run and striking out five.
Webster got on the board right from the jump, scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead. After two scoreless innings, Coe answered in the third with two runs, after an error from Webster and an RBI-single from Kaplan, scoring
Isaac Evans. The Gorlocks threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning but Greene stranded a runner on third with two outs to end Webster's chances. Coe then padded its lead in the fifth inning after a bases-loaded walk from Berger to give the Kohawks a 3-1 lead. Webster continued to threaten in the remaining innings the Coe pitchers handled the pressure and ended the Gorlock chances.
