Wrestling Finishes Second at NCAA Lower Midwest Regional as Four Kohawks Qualify for Nationals

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Coe College wrestling team took home a second-place finish at the NCAA Lower Midwest Wrestling Regional, which concluded on Sunday afternoon. All eight wrestlers placed in the top-eight of their weight classes while four Kohawks qualified for the D3 NCAA Tournament. Riley Wright (141), Taylor Mehmen (197), Brock Henderson (133) and Cole Erickson (157) all achieved the feat for the Kohawks. Overall, Coe gained 163.5 team points, just behind first-place Loras, which totaled 178.5. The Kohawks finished above Wartburg, North Central, Central (IA), Millikin and 12 other schools competing in the regional. 
 
Riley Wright, the sixth overall seed in the 141 weight class was impressive all weekend, storming through the bracket to reach the finals. In the final, Wright took on fourth-seeded Marc Fleener of North Central where he won a decision 7-5. Taylor Mehmen (197), the second-seed also stood out for the Kohawks as the senior swept through the 197 bracket to get to the final where he won by forfeit to become Coe's second regional champion. Brock Henderson (133), the six-seed and Cole Erickson (157), the four-seed also qualified for the national tournament, picking up victories in the third-place match.

Up next: The Kohawk wrestlers who qualified for the D3 NCAA Tournament will be back in action on March 12 and 13 at the National Tournament at the US Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
