Baseball Splits a Pair of Games on Sunday, Takes Series at #1 WashU

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Coe College baseball team secured a series victory over WashU on Sunday, splitting a pair of games with a 13-2 loss in game one while bouncing back for an 8-5 victory in game two. The Kohawks struggled offensively in the first game of the day, recording just two hits in the contest. WashU looked on its way to a doubleheader sweep, leading 5-0 in game two until Coe scored eight unanswered runs, with five coming in the fifth inning. The split moves the Kohawks to 3-3 overall while #1 WashU moves to 8-2 overall.

After an offensive struggle in the morning game, the Kohawks came to life in game two, collecting 10 hits including four extra-base hits. It was another slow start to the game as WashU got on the board in the second inning, taking a 2-0 after an RBI single and run-scoring error from the Kohawks. The Bears added to their lead in the third inning, with a double and single in back-to-back at bats, pushing their advantage to five heading into the fourth.

After a scoreless frame, Coe finally came alive, putting together five hits in the inning while tying the game at 5-5. In the inning, D'Vante Glenn, Jacob Henry and Kyle Alvarado all picked up RBIs as Henry's three-run double proved to be the big blow for the Kohawks. Coe wasn't done there, resuming its offensive showcase in the seventh inning when Jordan Kaplan hit a two-run double to put the Kohawks ahead 7-5. They got an insurance run late in the ninth inning, this time off the bat of Riley LeGrand who hit an RBI triple to score Henry and lock up the victory for Coe.

Coe started well in the opening game of the day, scoring an early run in the first inning after an RBI double from Kyle Alvarado. Despite the good start, the Kohawk pitching staff struggled to tame the Bear offense as WashU ripped off four-straight runs to hold a 4-1 lead at the end of four.

After a few scoreless innings, Coe cut the deficit in half with a Luke Smailes RBI single to pull the Kohawks within two runs of the lead. WashU then exploded in the bottom half of the seventh inning, scoring nine runs in the frame including a three-run homer from Tim Van Kirk. The offensive eruption gave WashU a comfortable lead which it saw out for the remaining two innings of the game.

Up next:  Coe returns to the diamond next week for its annual spring break trip when the Kohawks travel to Orlando for the RussMat Invitational.
