CLERMONT, FL - The Coe College softball team began what would turn out to be a very shortened season with a split on their opening, and only, day at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. The Kohawks took the field against 22nd ranked Manhattanville. Coe's youth showed against a strong Knights team as they fell 11-0 in the opener. The Kohawks quickly bounced back by defeating the Meredith Avenging Angels 11-0 in game #2.
After struggling offensively in the morning game, the Kohawks shook it off and responded with 11 hits in the five inning victory. Returning All-Region outfielder Kelsey Hora got the bats going with a lead off single in the top of the first. The next three Kohawks reached as an error helped produce the first two runs of the game. Keera Ball drove in another run with an RBI groundout while Skyler Stookey and Nicki Wood added RBI singles resulting in a five run inning.
The Kohawks added a run in the second inning on an RBI groundout from Ruby Kappeler before exploding for five more in the fourth. Hora again started things from her leadoff spot with a single. Heather Boeckenstedt would follow with a single, reaching base for the third straight time, before Megan Weber drove them both in with a single through the left side. Kappeler then singled and Ball doubled to score her. Stookey capped off the inning with her first collegiate home run.
Ellie Thurow picked up the win for Coe in her first collegiate start. Thurow went five innings scattering two hits, striking out six and not allowing any walks.
Starting seven freshmen, Coe got off to a rough start in game one against an excellent Knights team. Despite getting behind early, the Kohawks continued to battle putting runners on base in four of six innings. The Kohawks best scoring chance came in the first inning as Hora and Madi Parson walked and executed a double steal to put runners on second and third but were unable to plate those base runners.
