CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team took down the Simpson Storm 84-64 on Saturday afternoon. The Kohawks controlled the game from the onset, holding a lead for 39 minutes of the contest, with the largest lead being at 25 points in the second half. Coe moves to 1-1 overall and in A-R-C play while Simpson drops to 0-4 and 0-2 in the league.
The Kohawks were led by
Cael Schmitt with 17 points behind a 5-of-6 afternoon behind the 3-point line while adding eight assists.
Jarad Kruse had 16 points and five rebounds while
Sam Auen added 15 points in the dominant Kohawk performance. As a team, Coe shot 51 percent from the floor, while holding Simpson to 35 percent shooting.
The Kohawks exploded out of the gates taking an early 7-2 lead and forcing the Storm to call a timeout. Midway through the first half, Coe went on an 11-0 run behind 3-point baskets from
Jake Eilers and Auen. After a small Simpson run, Coe got the momentum back at the end of the half with a 6-0 spurt to take a 15-point lead into the break. The Kohawks shot 55 percent from the floor and 45 percent from the 3-point line.
Simpson came out hot in the second half with a 10-2 outburst, cutting the Kohawk lead to seven at 46-39. The Kohawks took complete control of the game with a 16-4 run late in the second half behind five points from Auen and
Ray Thrapp. The Kohawks dominated the paint outscoring the Storm 42-20 while scoring 16 points on 12 Storm turnovers.
Up next: The Kohawks will be back in action on Wednesday, February 3rd when they take on Wartburg College at 5:30 in Waverly.
