CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe College Track & Field and Cross Country coaches
Mat Littleton and
Krista Littleton have added
Amanda Owens to the Track & Field coaching staff as a throwing coach. Owens, who served as an assistant coach for the Kohawks from 2012-2014 was a standout thrower at the University of Nebraska where she earned all-conference honors in the Big-12.
"We are excited to add another female on staff," said
Krista Littleton. "Coach Owens brings a lot of energy and excitement to the program, with fresh new ideas. Since she had coached at Coe previously, we were able to talk to some alumni and even a previous coach who had worked with her, all of whom emphasized her knowledge of the sport and how much she cares about the student-athletes. She has shown that she can work with everyone from beginners to All-Americans, having helped throwers of all abilities and various levels of development improve tremendously. We feel she is the right person to help our throwers reach their full potential."
"Coach Owens' passion for the sport really stuck out to us when we interviewed her," said
Mat Littleton. "She has extensive throwing experience both as an athlete and a coach, as well as experience coaching right here at Coe. Based on the feedback we got from people who worked with her previously, her caring and athlete-centered approach fits our coaching philosophy of "We Build Winners In Life" extremely well. With our organizational mantra of #FiveStrong, it is important to us that we continue to ensure that all five event groups are prioritized and get high-quality coaching. We believe Coach Owens is the right person for our throwers and we look forward to working with her."
Amanda holds a bachelor's degree in science and education from Nebraska and a diploma in therapeutic massage from Herzing University. Her coaching experiences include stints at Lincoln area high schools where she served as a volunteer throwing coach. Following her graduation from Nebraska, Owens was the throwers coach at Nebraska City High School just before coming to Coe for the first time.
While at Coe, Owens helped coach Melissa Alger, who finished her career as a two-time All-American and a Barron Bremner Outstanding Athlete Award winner.
"Having Amanda as my throwing coach for my freshman and sophomore year was such a rewarding experience," said Alger. "If it was not for her, I would have never joined the track team. When throwing in high school, I just wore a pair of tennis shoes. So, when I joined the Coe Track and Field team, I continued to wear my worn-out sneakers. Amanda still had her throwing shoes from when she was in college. She wanted the best for her team and offered me her old throwing shoes to compete in. I wore those same shoes when I became an All-American my sophomore year. I'm always thankful for Amanda's generosity and letting me carry on her greatness in those shoes."
