GRINNELL, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team secured a 117-82 victory over Grinnell College on Friday evening in its 2021-22 season-opening game. The Kohawks started hot and immediately grabbed a double-digit lead before the 15-minute mark of the opening period en route to the comfortable victory over the Pioneers. Coe shot a staggering 69.9 percent from the floor, going 51-of-73 from the floor while holding Grinnell to just 26.4 percent shooting. The victory, which is Coe's second straight over Grinnell, gives the Kohawks a 1-0 start to the season while the Pioneers begin their campaign at 0-1.
Five Kohawks eclipsed the double-figure mark on offense as
Max Lampe led the way with 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
TJ Schnurr,
Ray Thrapp, Jarad Kruse and
Jacob Robertson all joined Lampe in double-digits as Schnurr chipped in with 17 points and five boards in his first action for Coe. As a team, the Kohawks had 33 assists on 51 buckets with five players recording at least four dimes in the contest.

- The Kohawks got off to the perfect start in the game, outscoring the hosts 14-5 in the first 3-plus minutes of action as Kruse and Lampe started with four quick points each. The lead continued to build for Coe before the midway point of the half, using a 22-6 spurt over a nearly six-minute stretch to take complete control of the game.
- Grinnell began to click offensively after the 10-minute mark of the opening period but it was unable to stop Coe as the teams traded blows until there were less than five minutes to play in the half. The Pioneers finally cut into the lead over the final few minutes of the frame, using an 11-9 stretch to trail 59-39 at the break.
- The Kohawks stormed out the half, ripping off a 15-7 run in the first 5:11 of the period to take a 28-point lead. During the run, Kruse had six more points while Auen chipped in with four on a pair of layups. The Pioneers refused to quit despite their largest deficit of the game, putting together their own spurt as the hosts outscored Coe 13-6 over the next four minutes to get within 21.
- Coe quickly put a stop to the momentum with a run of its own, scoring 17 on the next 21 points to push its lead back past 25 points. During the run, Schnurr had seven points while guard Zach Niemeyer chipped in with four points. Grinnell again started to click offensively towards the end of the second half as the teams matched one another for the remaining five minutes of the game as Coe cruised to the 117-82 victory.
Up next: Coe will break for the weekend and be back in action on Monday, November 8 when it travels to Cornell for a Bremner Cup game at 7:30 PM.
