JACKSONVILLE, Il. - The Coe College softball team split a pair of games with Illinois College on Friday afternoon, falling 4-3 in game one before taking game two 6-1. The Kohawks bounced back from a slow start to tie game one at 2-2 but came up short in extra innings. Coe bounced back in game two behind a one-hitter from sophomore
Hannah Ausenhus and twelve hits from the offense. Coe moves to 2-2 on the season while Illinois College moves to 5-9 on the season.
The Kohawks racked up 19 hits in the two games.
Megan Weber had a strong day at the plate leading the team with four hits while also driving in two runs.
Shaylee Dodd and
Keera Ball each added three hits for the Kohawks. Ball added three RBIs to lead the team.
Game One - Coe 3 - Illinois College 4
Coe got off to a rocky start on the road as it gave up unearned runs in each of the first two innings to find themselves in a 2-0 hole early. Kohawk starter
Abby Stock and the Kohawk defense would settle in after that as they held the Lady Blues scoreless for the next five innings. The Kohawks got the offense going in the top of the sixth scoring two runs on four hits to tie the game at two. Dodd and
Kelsey Hora got things rolling with back-to-back singles before
Skyler Stookey and Weber each drove home a run with singles of their own. With the game tied after the seventh inning the game went to the international tiebreaker rule to start the eighth. With a runner starting on second base the Kohawks were able to score one in the top half of the eighth but the Lady Blues got a two-run walk off single to win the game, 4-3.
Game Two - Coe 6 - Illinois College 1
The Kohawks bounced back strong in game two despite another slow start. The Lady Blues got on the scoreboard first as back-to-back Kohawk errors in the second put Coe down 1-0 early. Ausenhus would retire the next 15-straight Lady Blue batters to finish the game. With Ausenhus and the defense rolling the Kohawk bats got going in the fourth. Ball provided the big blow with a three RBI double after a Dodd single, Lady Blue error and Hora walk loaded the bases. Stookey would drive in Ball to give Coe a 4-1 lead after four innings. Ausenhus helped her own cause with a single to score Dodd in the fifth and a Lady Blue error allowed the Kohawks to score one more in the sixth to secure a split with a 6-1 victory.
Up next: The Kohawks are scheduled to host UW-Platteville at Prospect Meadows Park on Tuesday, March 16th. The squads will play a double-header scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
