CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Coe College baseball players
Riley LeGrand and
TJ Johnson were recognized by the American Rivers Conference on Monday afternoon for their performances last week. LeGrand was named the league's Male Athlete of the Week and the baseball offensive player of the week while Johson earned the A-R-C pitcher of the week. This is the second-straight week that a Kohawk has earned the league's overall athlete of the week honor as
Majda Suljic earned the honor last Monday. It is the second occasion in both LeGrand and Johnson's career they have earned recognition from the league.
Riley LeGrand
LeGrand, a senior left fielder, helped the Kohawks to a perfect 4-0 week, sweeping Nebraska Wesleyan in the A-R-C series. In the opener he was 2-of-2 at the dish, picking up second double of the season while tallying two runs, two RBI and two walks. He followed up with two more hits in game two, smashing another double and adding one walk and one stolen base. LeGrand stayed hot in the third game of the series, going 2-of-3 at the plate with one run scored in the narrow 3-1 victory. He capped off his excellent weekend with a 1-for-3 effort, collecting his third and fourth RBI of the series. LeGrand, who is on a seven-game hitting-streak, boasts an average of .488, with 21 hits, 14 RBI and seven stolen bases.
TJ Johnson
Johnson, who sits 10th nationally in wins with four, was dominant in Friday's game one. The senior from Cedar Rapids tossed seven scoreless innings, retiring the order in every inning but the third. He started strong, striking out four of the first six Prairie Wolf batters he faced. In the third, he surrendered his lone hit on a single but got a line-out double play from the next batter to get back on track. Johnson then cruised through the remaining four frames, retiring NWU in order for the final 12 outs of the game. He also had an outstanding weekend at the plate, collecting eight hits, two runs and one double in the series sweep. Johnson dropped his ERA to 1.38 while improving his batting average to .429.
