CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA. - The Coe College baseball team defeated Cornell College 7-1 in a neutral site matchup at Mount Mercy University. The Kohawks scored three early runs and got a solid performance from starting pitcher Matthew Mittelmark, who worked five innings while surrendering just one run. Overall, Coe had 10 hits and six RBI in the contest while recording zero errors. The win improves the Kohawks to 2-1 overall while the Rams drop to 0-3 on the year.

TJ Johnson led the offense for Coe on the evening, going 4-of-4 at the dish while adding two RBI and two runs scored. Jacob Henry also recorded a multi-hit game for Coe, going 2-of-4 at the plate while driving in and scoring one run. Isaac Evans and Jordan Kaplan each had one hit in the game for Coe as the pair each had a double. Mittelmark, who pitched five innings and earned the win, struck out three batters while allowing just three hits.

The Kohawks side stepped back-to-back walks to start the game before taking advantage of a pair of Ram errors to plate two runs in the bottom of the first. The second of the two runs came on an RBI single from Johnson. The Kohawks helped produce the runs with four stolen bases in the inning including two from Issac Evans.

Cornell answered back in the top of the second with a homerun to lead-off the inning. The Kohawks again worked out of further damage with a double-play to erase a no-out single before Mittelmark, recorded his second strikeout of the game to strand a runner on second. Coe responded to the homer with a little small ball as JT Henry started the inning with a bunt single and took second on the third Ram error of the game. Henry would score on an Evans double to put the Kohawks back to two, 3-1 after two innings.

Coe added three runs on four consecutive hits in the third to extend its lead. Kaplan got things started with a double before back-to-back-to-back RBI singles from Johnson, Tyler Elliott and Luke Smailes. The Kohawks continued to grow their lead in the fifth with a RBI single through the left side off the bat of Henry which ended the scoring in the game. The combination of Tyler Riebhoff and Kaplan managed to record the final 12 outs of the game with Riebhoff working three innings and Kaplan one.
