INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Coe College softball team completed a three-game sweep of Simpson College on Monday afternoon with a 16-10 victory over the Storm. The Kohaws, who scored 10 runs in the first two innings, racked up 15 hits in the game and got home runs from Skyler Stookey and Natalie Blank to lead them past the Storm. COE 16 - SIMPSON 10
Coe started hot, as the first two batters reached safely to set the stage for the offense. After a wild pitch advanced the runners into scoring position, Madi Parson opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly, scoring Kelsey Hora on the play. Weber singled later in the inning, scoring Keera Ball and pushing the lead to 2-0 after a half-inning. After a 1-2-3 inning from starter Hannah Ausenhus, Coe exploded for eight runs in the second, using seven hits and two Storm errors to take control. The first three Kohawk hitters reached safely to start the inning as Kappeler scored to stretch the lead to three on a Simpson error. The big hit came from Weber as she doubled down the left-field line to score two more runs as Stookey and Parson scored on the play. The Kohawks got two more runs before the end of the inning, as Kappeler singled home Bailey Erlandson and later scored on an error by Simpson as Coe led 10-0 after 1 ½ innings. Simpson would battle back in the bottom of the second and third innings, scoring seven runs across the two frames while cutting the deficit to just one. The Kohawks answered back in the top of the fourth inning, as Blank hit a three-run homer, scoring Kappeler and Shaylee Dodd on the long ball. The Storm struck back in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting a home run and RBI single to pull within three runs. Coe got some insurance in the top of the seventh inning, as Stookey hit a two-run bomb while Chloe Severson picked up an RBI single to secure the victory for Coe.

Up next: Coe will return to Cedar Rapids tomorrow afternoon for an American Rivers Conference doubleheader with Central set for a 2:00 p.m. start.
