CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College softball team won the opening two games of a three-game series, downing the Duhawks 11-3 in the opener while winning 5-2 in game two. The Kohawk bats produced 12 hits in game one, getting six extra base hits including home runs from
Madi Parson,
Megan Weber and
Hannah Ausenhus. In game two, starting pitcher
Ellie Thurow pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits while allowing just two runs in the game.
Skyler Stookey hit a two-run blast in the sixth inning to help the Kohawks improve to 15-7 overall and 10-1 in the A-R-C.
Coe had 17 hits in total, as
Megan Weber and
Skyler Stookey led the way with three each while
Kelsey Hora,
Keera Ball, Madi Parson and
Ruby Kappeler each recorded multiple hits on the day. Ausenhus and Thurow combined to toss 12 innings of 11-hit softball while allowing just five runs in the doubleheader. Thurow recorded eight strikeouts for the second time this season after achieving the feat on March 27 at Nebraska Wesleyan.
COE 11 - LORAS 3 (5 Innings)
Loras got on the board first in the first game, scoring three runs on three hits, including an RBI single and two RBI. Ausenhus bounced back at the plate in the bottom of the inning, hitting a two-run blast to cut the deficit to just one run. After a 1-2-3 inning from Ausenhus, the Kohawk offense picked her up, scoring four runs in the bottom of the frame which featured a two-run homer from Parson
and a two-run double from
Shaylee Dodd. Ausenhus then posted back-to-back scoreless innings, getting two strikeouts along the way. The Kohawks added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with another long ball, this time off the bat of Weber as she connected for a two-run bomb, her third of the year. Later in the inning, pinch-hitter
Chloe Severson made it 10-3 with a two-RBI double to left-center, scoring Kappeler and Dodd with the hit. Hora
then ended the game with an RBI single, scoring
Natalie Hansen who came in to pinch run for Severson.
COE 5 - LORAS 2
Loras threatened in the top of the first inning in game two, but Thurow
worked herself out of trouble with a strikeout to end the inning. After a scoreless bottom of the first and top of the second, Coe got on the board with an RBI groundout from Kappeler, scoring pinch-runner
Kaitlyn Filter on the play. The Kohawks picked up another run in the bottom of the third inning on another RBI groundout, as Ball drove in Hora on the productive out. Coe added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as
Natalie Blank drove in Kappeler with an RBI single to give Thurow some more insurance. The Kohawk starter ran into some more trouble in the top of the sixth inning but she stranded runners on second and third, getting the final two batters to strike out. Stookey then hit Coe's fourth homer of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning, smashing a two-run shot for her fourth of the year. Loras finally got to Thurow in the 7th as Gabriella Garcia hit a two-run shot but Thurow buckled down and got a fly out to end the game.
Up next: Coe will end the three-game series with the Duhawks tomorrow afternoon at Clark Field at 12 p.m. The Kohawks will honor the 2021 senior class following the single game.
