CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team split a pair of games with the University of Dubuque on Friday afternoon at Bill Quinby Field. The Kohawks dropped the opener 2-1 after recording just seven hits but the offense came to life in game two, producing 14 hits and nine runs to earn the split. Coe got solid starting efforts from game one starter
TJ Johnson and game two starter
Tyce Johnson as the pair combined to allow just four runs, two of which were earned. The results move the Kohawks to 23-4 overall and 19-3 in the American Rivers Conference while Dubuque goes to 11-14 and 9-9 in the league.
Coe piled up 21 hits in the two games, posting 14 in game two while recording four extra-base hits.
TJ Deardorff hit his third home run of the season in the third inning of the second game en route to a two-hit, two-RBI game.
Daniel Hawes, who started behind the plate in game one, recorded a multi-hit game, his first of the season.

Jack Allison, and Deardorff all had two-plus hits in the second game while
Jacob Henry,
TJ Johnson, Allison, Deardorff and
Creighton Kreshel had at least one RBI in the game.
GAME 1 (7 INNINGS)
DUBUQUE 2 - COE 1
The Kohawks and Spartans went scoreless for the opening three innings as starting pitchers
TJ Johnson and Shaun Logan were in control early on. Coe finally got on the board in the bottom of the third inning as after back-to-back singles from Elliott and
TJ Deardorff as Elliott crossed home on an error by the right fielder. Dubuque answered in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of a Kohawk error to tie the game at one. The Spartans struck again in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead, putting a runner on second with two outs which scored on another Kohawk error. Pinch-hitter
Jack Allison drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning but Logan buckled down and retired three consecutive batters to secure the victory.
GAME 2
COE 9 - DUBUQUE 2
Game two starter
Tyce Johnson ran into immediate trouble in the top of the first inning but the freshman right-hander buckled down and got an inning-ending double play to escape the jam. After 2 ½ scoreless innings, Coe got the bats going and scored two runs on two hits in the bottom of the third which featured a solo home run from Deardorff and an RBI from Henry. The Kohawks scored three more in the bottom of the fourth while taking advantage of a pair of Spartan errors. LeGrand led off with a single and was followed by Kaplan who reached on a Dubuque miscue. Allison then reached on an infield single but an error on the play allowed LeGrand to score as the Kohawks took a 3-0 lead. Deardorff then made it 4-0 on a sacrifice fly before
Creighton Kreshel singled home Coe's third run of the inning and fifth of the game. Dubuque finally got to Coe's starter in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs on three hits including a two-RBI single from Kyle Radi but a groundout in the next at-bat got
Tyce Johnson out of it. Coe got one run back in the bottom of the frame as
TJ Johnson scored on another Spartan error after doubling to reach earlier in the inning. The Kohawks then broke it open in the bottom of the seventh inning, adding three more runs on six hits. In the inning,
TJ Johnson, LeGrand, Kaplan, Allison and Deardorff all recorded hits while
TJ Johnson, Kaplan and Allison grabbed RBI.
Austin Divello, who entered the game in the top of the seventh inning to relieve
Tyce Johnson, got an inning-ending double play in the eighth to escape potential trouble before pitching a scoreless ninth to earn the three-inning save.
Up next: The Kohawks will finish the four-game series with Dubuque on Saturday afternoon at Daniels Park with the final two games of the series with first-pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
