Baseball Extends Win Streak to 12 Games, Wins Two at Loras

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team extended its winning streak to 12 games on Friday, defeating Loras College 8-3 in game one and 9-8 in the nightcap. Game one starter TJ Johnson benefited from four early runs in game one, working all seven innings while improving his record to 6-0 on the season. In game two, the Kohawks scored seven runs in the fourth inning and fought off a late Duhawk rally to win their 12th straight of the season. The sweep moves Coe to 17-2 overall and 13-1 in the A-R-C while Loras drops to 11-7 and 8-6 in the league.

The Kohawk offense picked up 18 hits in the two games, including seven extra-base hits and one home run. Deardorff led Coe at the plate, picking up three hits and four RBI while smashing his second homer of the season. Four other Kohawks had multiple hits in the set, as Isaac Evans, Jordan Kaplan, Johnson and Jacob Henry all achieved the feat. Evans had four hits on the day to lead the Kohawks, recording his fifth double of the season while scoring three runs. Johnson notched three hits in eight plate appearances, adding three RBI and three runs to bring his season total to 21 and 15 respectively.

GAME 1
COE 8 - LORAS 3
Deardorff got his day started well with a first-inning RBI, driving in Evans to give the Kohawks an early 1-0 lead in the opener. Game one starter, TJ Johnson then tripled home two more runs, scoring LeGrand and Deardorff to make it 3-0 right from the jump. Henry then hit a sacrifice fly to score Johnson, which would end the Kohawk scoring in the opening inning. Loras got one back off Johnson in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly but the offense responded in the top of the fourth, pushing three more runs across in the frame. Henry led off with a single and later advanced on a David Hawes single to set the stage for Matthew Schrader, who drove home Henry with a single to left. Schrader then stole second, allowing Hawes to score on the throw, pushing the lead to 6-1. Later in the inning, Schrader came around to score on a wild pitch, giving Johnson plenty of insurance to work with on the mound. The senior righty did surrender a single run in the fourth and fifth innings, but he managed to limit the damage while pitching a near-perfect sixth and seventh en-route to his sixth victory of the season.

GAME 2
COE 9 - LORAS 8
Evans, the Kohawk lead-off man, singled to kick-off game two and Deardorff stayed hot, smashing a two-run home, his second of the season. After a scoreless second inning and top of the third, the Duhawks got one back in the bottom of the inning, as Max Cullen hit an RBI single to make the score 2-1. The Kohawk offense then exploded for seven runs in the fourth, getting six hits and four RBI to take control of the game. Henry and Reid Rausch reached on a single and a walk to lead off the inning before Tyler Elliott advanced the pair with a sacrifice bunt to put runners in scoring position. Creighton Kreshel was hit in the Kohawks' next plate appearance as James VanHooser followed and delivered a two-run double to score Rausch and Henry. Kreshel then scored on a passed ball which allowed VanHooser to move to third. Evans then doubled to center field, plating VanHooser while extending the lead to 6-1 with just one out in the inning. After a pitching change, Deardorff picked up his third RBI, singling home Evans to make it 7-1. Jordan Kaplan then reached with two outs on a single, a later scored on an RBI-double from Johnson which kept the inning alive. The Kohawks got their final run of the game on a wild pitch as Johnson came around to score to make it 9-1. The Duhawks refused to go away despite the large game-two deficit, scoring four runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to pull within one run of tying the game. Coe pitcher Austin Divello then worked a scoreless eighth inning after a tough seventh to set the stage for Deardorff who came in to close the game. Deardorff capped off his excellent day in style, striking out the Duhawks in order to secure the 12th straight win.

Up next: The Kohawks wrap up the series on Sunday, April 11th with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. in Dubuque.
