WAVERLY, Iowa - The Coe College softball team saw its 2021 campaign come to an end on Saturday as the Kohawks dropped a pair of games against St. Thomas and St. Olaf on the second day of the NCAA regional. Coe got behind early in the winner's bracket game against St. Thomas as the Tommies took the contest 8-1 before losing 2-0 to the Oles in game two which featured just five total hits. Coe, which ends the season at 25-15 overall and 18-6 in league play, earned an NCAA tournament victory for the fourth straight season.
GAME ONE
ST. THOMAS 8 - COE 1
The Tommies struck first in the top of the first inning, using some small ball to push two runs across the plate to take a 2-0 lead. Coe responded in the home half of the opening inning, scoring one run on an RBI double from
Skyler Stookey which scored
Ruby Kappeler on the play. Both pitchers worked scoreless frames in the second frame but St. Thomas managed to add to its lead in the third on an RBI single up the middle. St. Thomas broke things open in the top of the fifth inning, scoring four runs on four hits which featured a two-run double for the Tommies. The Tommies added another in the top of the sixth inning, getting an RBI single to push the score to 8-1 which ended the scoring in the game.
GAME TWO
ST. OLAF 2 - COE 0
Both starting pitchers were dominant early on, combining to throw four straight scoreless innings to open the game. St. Olaf's leadoff hitter walked to start the game but
Ellie Thurow stranded the runner with a strikeout and groundout which got her out of the inning.
Kelsey Hora then walked in the bottom of the first but Julie Graf managed to work a scoreless first thanks to an inning-ending pop out. After a hitless second, St. Olaf threatened in the third, getting runners on first and second with just one out. Thurow buckled down and worked her way around the jam getting the next two Ole hitters to fly out.
Skyler Stookey led off the home half of the fourth inning with a walk and later advanced to second on a passed ball but she was stranded by Graf who got three straight outs. St. Olaf scored the game's lone runs in the top of the fifth with two outs on a home run from Taylor DeCroock which proved to be plenty of insurance for the St. Olaf hurler. The Kohawks managed another hit off Graf in the bottom of the sixth inning as Stookey singled to bring the tying run to the plate but the Oles got another pop out to strand the runner. Thurow then tossed a 1-2-3 seventh to give her offense one final chance but the Kohawks were retired in order to end the contest.
