CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team racked up 15 hits in a 13-0 victory over Wartburg in the first game of a doubleheader while game two was suspended before the top of the 12th inning due to darkness. The Kohawks, who had an additional 17 hits in game two before its suspension, scored one run in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game going into the ninth. The halted game will resume tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. prior to the originally scheduled doubleheader between the Kohawks and the Knights. With the game one win, Coe improved to 26-4 overall and 22-3 in the A-R-C while Wartburg fell to 14-21 and 26-4 in the league.
GAME 1 (7 INNINGS)
COE 13 - WARTBURG 0
Coe got on the board immediately in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs to get ahead early. LeGrand reached with one out with a single and moved to third on a double from
TJ Johnson, putting runners at second and third. After a wild pitch that allowed LeGrand to score, Kaplan made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly to left field. Coe broke the game open in the bottom of the second after a shutdown inning from
TJ Johnson in the top of the frame. The Kohawks plated six runs in the inning on five hits, including a pair of two-out, RBI doubles from LeGrand and Kaplan.
TJ Deardorff and
Jacob Henry also recorded RBI singles later in the inning as Coe scored four total runs with two outs in the second.
The offensive showcase continued for the Kohawks in the bottom of the third with five more runs on six hits.
Isaac Evans delivered a two-RBI double to left, scoring
Matthew Schrader and
Daniel Hawes before LeGrand doubled home another. Kaplan then made it 12-0 with his second RBI of the game, this time on a single down the left field line. The final run of the inning came off the bat of
Tyler Elliot, who singled home Kaplan with a base hit through the left side of the infield. Johnson, who had a no-hit bid broken up in the top of the fifth inning on a single, remained dominant on the mound for the rest of the game, cruising to his eighth win of the season.
GAME 2 (SUSPENDED DUE TO DARKNESS)
COE 6 - WARTBURG 6
Wartburg scored its first runs of the day in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of a walk and an error to take an early 2-0 lead in game two. Coe answered back in the bottom of the first, getting two hits and two runs in order to tie the game. In the inning, Deardorff recorded an RBI single while a first-and-third double steal from
TJ Johnson and Kaplan made it 2-2. Following a scoreless third inning, Wartburg retook the lead, using three hits to score two runs. Zach Walton made it 3-2 with an RBI single before Brett Kelting's sacrifice fly gave the Knights a two-run lead. The Kohawks fought back again in the bottom of the inning, getting three hits of their own while scoring a pair of runs to tie the game. Kaplan picked up another RBI, singling home LeGrand before an RBI single from
Jacob Henry scored Kaplan and tied the game at four. Coe grabbed a lead for the first time in game two in the bottom of the fourth inning as
TJ Johnson grounded into a bases-loaded fielder's choice, allowing
Daniel Hawes to score. Wartburg then scored one in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to retake the lead, as the Knights got a leadoff homer and an RBI sacrifice fly to go up 6-5. The game then went scoreless in Coe's half of the seventh and the top of the eighth but the Kohawks tied the game in the home half of the inning on an RBI single from
TJ Johnson which scored LeGrand. Coe still had runners on first and third with just one out in the inning but the Knights retired two consecutive hitters to keep it knotted at six. Wartburg got a pair of hits in the top of the 9th but Kaplan came in to pitch and got a crucial double play to end the Knight threat. Coe again had a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the 10th inning as Deardorff cranked a one-out double but Wartburg pitcher Aaron Eybers managed to work around the jam.
Up next: Coe will return to the diamond tomorrow morning for the resumption of game two prior to the final two games of the series with the Knights.
