Softball Earns Game Two Comeback Victory to Split at Wartburg, Game Three to Decide A-R-C Title & NCAA Tournament Bid

WAVERLY, Iowa - The Coe College softball team earned a doubleheader split on Friday afternoon with Wartburg after erasing a six-run deficit to earn a game two victory. The Kohawks took an early lead in the opening game with two runs in the fourth inning but a four-run sixth inning for the Knights handed Wartburg the opener. The Knights jumped on the Kohawks from the start of game two, taking a 6-0 lead in the second inning but Coe fought back with three in third, four in the fifth and two in the sixth to complete the comeback. The split means tomorrow's rubber game between the Kohawks and Knights will decide both the A-R-C regular-season champion and the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. With the results, Coe moves to 22-11 overall and 17-6 in the league while Wartburg goes to 26-7 and 17-6 in the A-R-C.

GAME ONE
WARTBURG 4 - COE 2
Both offenses were cold in the opening three innings of the first game as the teams combined for just four hits early on. The Kohawks broke the deadlock in the top of the fourth inning as the first two batters reached safely to set the table for the offense. Later in the inning, Ruby Kappeler drove home Kelsey Hora with an infield single before Megan Weber made it 2-0 with an RBI single down the left-field line which scored Madi Parson. Coe then had runners on second and third with two outs in the inning but a ground out to the pitcher got the Knights out of any more trouble. More scoreless action broke out in the fifth inning and the top of the sixth but the Knights finally got on the board in the bottom of the frame, scoring all four of their runs. In the inning, Wartburg got three hits and four runs in the inning, including a pair of two-out home runs. The Kohawks threatened in the top of the seventh inning with runners on second and third with nobody out but the Knights retired three consecutive batters to end the game.

GAME TWO
COE 9 - WARTBURG 8
The Knights took the early lead in game two, jumping out in front 4-0 in the first inning on a pair of fielder's choices and an RBI double from Tarah Wehde. Wartburg added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to increase its lead, getting a two-run triple from Leah Campos scoring Kaci Sherwood and Olivia Brecht on the hit. Despite the large deficit, the Kohawks refused to give in, responding with three runs in the top of the third inning to get within striking distance. Kappeler reached base after being hit by a pitch and stole second to get into scoring position and Parson drove her in. Skyler Stookey then hit a two-run homer to left field in Coe's next at-bat, drawing the Kohawks within three of the lead. Wartburg managed to get one back in the bottom of the inning as the Knights made it 7-3 with an RBI groundout. The Knights added one more insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning as they scored their eighth run on a passed ball.

Immediately, Coe responded, getting four runs back in the top of the fifth inning on a grand slam homer from Stookey which scored Parson, Kappeler and Hora. The Kohawks then loaded the bases again in the same inning but an inning-ending groundout got the Knights out of the jam with their lead still intact. Following a scoreless home-half of the fifth inning, Hora singled to lead off the sixth and stole second to get into scoring position. After another single from Kappeler, Parson singled through the middle to score Hora and tie the game at eight. Stookey, Coe's next hitter grounded out to the pitcher but managed to move both runners up 60 feet, giving Weber an RBI opportunity. The senior came through in the clutch and produced an RBI fly out to right field, allowing the speedy Kappeler to score the eventual winning run from third. Game two starter Hannah Ausenhus managed to bounce back after a tough start to the game and surrendered just two base runners in the final two innings of the game.

Up next: Coe will play its final regular-season game tomorrow afternoon as it finishes out the three-game series with the Knights at 1 p.m. in Waverly.
