Second Half-Surge Falls Short in Men’s Basketball’s Defeat at Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team was defeated 80-73 by Buena Vista University on Saturday evening in an American Rivers Conference matchup. Buena Vista jumped in front early in the contest, taking an 11-point lead into the break but Coe kept it close throughout the early portion of the second. The Kohawks surged late in the second half to grab its first lead since early in the opener but the Beavers scored 11 of the game's final 16 points to survive the comeback attempt. With the loss, the Kohawks drop to 11-4 overall and 3-3 in the A-R-C while the Beavers improve to 7-8 on the season and 4-2 in league play. 
 
Jarad Kruse continued to dominate on the offensive end for Coe, scoring a team-high 24 points while shooting 11-of-20 from the floor. The senior was joined in double-figures by Ray Thrapp and Cael Schmitt as the pair registered 13 and 12 points respectively. Sam Auen and Jacob Robertson also had solid days for the offense, scoring nine and eight points while grabbing five boards each.

  • BVU and Coe traded blows early in the first half as the teams were tied at nine four-plus minutes into the contest. Coe took the first real lead in the game, using a 7-3 surge over a 2:48 stretch to quickly jump in front 16-12. The hosts answered back with their own run during the next two minutes, outscoring the Kohawks 9-2 while taking a 21-18 lead with 10:24 to play in the first. 
  • Coe slowed the run with a pair of buckets to close the gap back to two points but Buena Vista took control of the first half with a 10-4 stretch before the seven-minute mark of the period. Thrapp then helped slow the run for a moment, hitting a jumper to make it 31-26 but another run from the Beavers gave them a ten-point lead with 3:57 left in the opener. The squads exchanged buckets for the final few minutes of the period as Buena Vista held a 49-38 lead after 20 minutes.
  • The Kohawks stormed back early in the second half, getting a 9-4 run immediately out of the halftime break to slice the deficit to six. The teams went back and forth for the next few minutes however a clutch 3 from Thrapp got Coe within three points with 8:45 to play. 
  • BVU scored the next five points to quickly push its lead back to eight but Coe answered with a 10-0 run to make it 66-64. The run featured four points from Robertson and an important 3 from Auen as the pair helped propel Coe into the lead with 5:08 remaining. The Beavers retook control of the contest over the next minute-plus, using a 5-0 run to take a three-point advantage. Coe continued to fight down the stretch, getting within one point of the lead but the hosts hit two clutch baskets in the final minute of play to hold on to the victory. 
Up next: The Kohawks return to the court on Wednesday evening for another A-R-C matchup at Wartburg with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 PM.
