Men’s Basketball Dominates Second Half in 54-49 Win over Edgewood

MADISON, Wisc. - The Coe College men's basketball team shook off a tough first half and exploded in the second for its second road win of the season, defeating Edgewood College 54-49 at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. Coe struggled in the opening half, getting outscored 28-21 in the period while shooting just 27 percent from the floor and 0-4 from beyond the arc. The Kohawks responded in the second half, knocking down four triples while outscoring the Eagles 33-21. Coe's defense was also impressive in the second 20 minutes, holding the Eagles to only 29 percent shooting and 0-6 from deep. Three Kohawks reached double-figures in the win as TJ Schnurr, Cael Schmitt and Greg Hall finished with 12, 11 and 11 points respectively. Schnurr, who also had two blocks and one steal, led the team in rebounds with eight boards including three on the offensive glass. The win moves Coe to 4-2 overall while Edgewood drops to 0-4 on the year.

  • The Eagles started hot, getting a 6-2 run in the opening 1:37 as Jake Schroeckenthaler scored three early buckets for the hosts. Coe quickly answered, getting a strong 12-6 spurt during the next eight-plus minutes to take a 14-12 lead. Schmitt had six points during the stretch including a pair of jumpers inside the paint. Edgewood dominated the next six minutes of game action, ripping off a 14-4 run to grab a 26-18 lead with just over two minutes left in the half. Coe slowed the run before the half and stayed within touching distance, edging the Eagles 3-2 over the final few moments to limit the damage prior to the half. 
  • Edgewood extended the lead quickly in the second half, getting four buckets in the opening moments to take a double-digit lead. Coe then exploded into action, getting a 9-2 run over the next four minutes to slice the deficit to five points. After back-to-back buckets from the Eagles, Coe began its next charge, scoring 10 unanswered points during a two-minute stretch to grab a 43-42 lead. 
  • Edgewood refused to go away quietly, getting a 7-3 spurt before the 3:30 mark to regain a 49-46 lead. Coe hung tough and tightened the clamps down the stretch, holding the Eagles scoreless for over three minutes while getting eight points of its own. The run, which gave Coe the 54-49 victory, featured four points from Schnurr and a pair of free throws from Schmitt and Tre McCrary, who put the final touches on the win. 
Up next: The Kohawks are back in action following the Thanksgiving break on Saturday, November 26, taking on Edgewood College at 2 PM.
