Men’s Basketball Drops Road Contest at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team saw its six-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday evening, falling 78-58 to the University of Dubuque. UD, which shot 54.2 percent in the game, opened an early lead in the first half after hitting seven 3s in the first 20 minutes. The Spartans then extended their lead early in the second half and never looked back en route to the victory over the Kohawks. The loss drops Coe to 17-6 on the season and 9-5 in the A-R-C while Dubuque improves to 16-6 overall and 11-2 in the league. 
 
Cael Schmitt scored a team-high 19 points in the game, shooting 8-of-15 from the floor and 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. The sophomore, who played 29 minutes, added two assists, two rebounds and one steal. Jarad Kruse finished with nine points for Coe, shooting 4-of-8 while adding four boards, three assists and one steal.

  • UD was on top to open the game, using an early 12-5 run to grab a significant lead just over four minutes in. Coe quickly responded, getting a jumper from Jacob Robertson and a 3 from Ray Thrapp to cut the deficit to five. The Spartans continued to click on offense despite the Kohawk defense, ripping off a 10-2 spurt over the next 3:23 to push their lead to 25-12. 
  • Coe and UD traded buckets for the next few minutes but the hosts managed to maintain the double-digit lead until a 3 from Robertson made it 32-23. The Spartans then ripped off another run during the final six minutes of the half, outscoring the Kohawks 15-7 to stretch the lead to 17. 
  • Dubuque came out of the halftime break on fire, scoring 13 of the first 15 points in the second half to make it 60-32 with 14:42 remaining. Coe answered with a big 13-5 spurt over the next three-plus minutes of the game to slash the deficit to 20 with ample time remaining. UD buckled down despite the big stretch from Coe, outscoring the visitors 9-4 before the four-minute mark of the half to secure the victory. 
Up next: Coe is off this weekend and returns to the court on Wednesday evening for a crucial matchup with Wartburg in its final regular-season home game at 7:30 PM.
