Baseball Splits Double Header against RV UW-Stevens Point

ORLANDO, FL. - The Coe College baseball team split a doubleheader with (RV) Stevens Point on Friday, winning 7-0 in game one before falling 4-2 to the Pointers in game two. Coe got a two-hit shutout from ace-pitcher TJ Deardorff in game one, as the senior pitched all seven innings and struck out seven en route to the win. The Kohawk bats produced nine hits in the win, including two from Jacob Brosius, Reid Rausch and Joey Sartain. The Pointers pulled out the win late in game two, scoring runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to split the series. The results move Coe to 5-5 on the season while UW-Stevens Points moves to 4-1 overall.

Game Facts
  • The Kohawks and Pointers were scoreless for the first two innings but Coe put up a four-spot in the top of the third inning to grab the lead. Joey Sartain singled to lead off the frame before moving to second on a Daniel Hawes sacrifice bunt. Mitchell Eckardt then made it first and third, getting to first on a bunt single to set the table for the Kohawks offense. Brosius cashed in during the next plate appearance, singling home Sartain to give Coe a 1-0 lead. The big hit came in the next at-bat thanks to Reid Rausch who hit a bases-clearing triple to drive in Brosius and Eckardt. 
  • The game went scoreless again during the next three innings as Deardorff continued to dominate on the mound. Coe got insurance in the tip of the seventh inning, adding three runs on three hits. Three-straight batters reached to start the inning, loading the bases for Coe with nobody out. Two batters later, TJ Johnson drove in the fifth run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Sartain from third. Rausch came up clutch yet again later in the next AB, clearing the bases with a two-RBI single as Eckardt and Creighton Kreshel scored to make it 7-0. Deardorff returned to the bump in the bottom of the seventh inning and secured the victory for Coe, recording a 1-2-3 seventh with a flyout, ground out and strikeout.

  • Coe again started the scoring in game two, pushing two across the plate in the bottom of the third inning to grab an early lead. Eckardt doubled with one out and advanced to third on a passed ball before an RBI groundout from Brosius made it 1-0. TJ Johnson walked in Coe's next plate appearance and then stole second to put himself in scoring position with two down. Rausch then reached on an error by the shortstop which allowed Johnson to score before Rausch was thrown out trying to advance to second. 
  • Stevens Point got its first runs of the day in the fifth after a scoreless fourth, scoring one run on two hits. A leadoff double set the table for the Pointers who got an RBI-single that sliced the lead to one. 
  • The Pointers tied the game in the top of the sixth inning, pushing one run across while taking advantage of three Kohawk errors. UW-Stevens Point got a bases-loaded walk in the frame, tying the game with no one out. Austin Divello entered the game for Coe looking to limit the damage and the sophomore delivered, getting three-straight outs to keep the game tied at two. 
  • Stevens Point continued the scoring streak in the top of the seventh inning, scoring the game-winning runs in the frame with two outs. Back-to-back batters reached with one out before Divello got the second on a fly-out. The big hit came one batter later as the Pointers got a bases-clearing triple to take a 4-2 lead and eventually win the game. 
 
Up next: Coe completes its spring break trip with a single game against Augustana College at 8:45 AM CT.
