DECATUR, Ill. - The Coe College baseball team split a pair of non-conference games on Saturday afternoon to open the 2022 season, winning 5-2 over UW-Oshkosh while suffering a 2-1 defeat to Millikin. Coe got an excellent pitching performance in the opening game from senior
TJ Deardorff who earned the victory after six innings of work where he allowed just two hits and one run. The Kohawks got a pair of RBI from catcher
James VanHooser and a solo home run from
Mitchell Eckardt en route to the victory. Coe and Millikin battled in game two, with neither offense producing many runs on the scoreboard. The Big Blue pulled out the 2-1 victory in the bottom of the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. Coe starts the season 1-1 overall while UW-Oskosh and Millikin move to 1-4 and 10-2 respectively.

- Oshkosh got on the board first after a scoreless opening inning, pushing one run across in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice bunt.
- The Kohawks got even in the top of the fourth inning as TJ Johnson scored the first run of the season for Coe. He led the inning off with a walk before stealing second and moving to third on an errant pick-off attempt. Tyce Johnson then drove him home with a sacrifice fly to right field as he made it 1-1.
- Coe added another run in the top of the fifth inning as VanHooser picked up his first RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly which scored Creighton Kreshel. The Kohawks added some insurance in the seventh after a scoreless sixth, pushing a pair of runs across to extend their lead to 4-1. VanHooser reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Jordan Joselit to score the third run before Kreshel scored on a failed pickoff attempt to make it 4-1.
- UWO responded with one run in the bottom of the inning but Austin Divello, who came in to relieve Deardorff, got a strikeout to strand a runner on second and end the inning. Coe ended the game's scoring in the eighth inning as Eckardt delivered another insurance run with the Kohawks first homer of the season.

- The Kohawks got another solid pitching performance from Tyce Johnson in the first game as the sophomore worked five scoreless innings while scattering three hits. Coe's offense gave its starter a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, as Kreshel doubled to right field, driving in Reid Rausch who led the frame off with a double of his own.
- Millikin tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting an RBI single with two outs off Kohawk reliever Tyler Riebhoff. The game went scoreless for the next two innings, despite Coe putting runners on second and third in the top of the eighth.
- The Big Blue pulled out the victory in the bottom of the ninth inning thanks to a leadoff single and some small ball. Millikin loaded the bases with one out after a pair of walks and got the winning run on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Up next: Coe will round out its opening weekend of action tomorrow with matchups against UW-Oshkosh and Millikin at 10 AM and 1 PM.
