PELLA, Iowa - The Coe College softball team ended its A-R-C regular-season schedule on Sunday afternoon, splitting a pair of games with Central to claim the third seed in the next weekend's league tournament. Coe suffered a tough 7-0 defeat in the opener, recording just two hits while committing nine total errors as Central cruised to the win. The Kohawks bounced back in game two for a dominant 8-0 victory in five innings, racking up seven hits to back up an impressive pitching effort from freshman
Abbie White. With the split, Coe moves to 22-12 overall and 9-7 in the American Rivers Conference while Central moves to 21-17 and 7-9.
GAME ONE
CENTRAL 7 - COE 0
Game Facts
- Coe had a quick scoring chance in the opening game, getting a one-out single from Natalie Blank who then stole second but two-straight outs ended the early threat. Central took the lead two scoreless innings later, getting three runs on two hits and three errors in the bottom of the third. The Dutch got one RBI hit to start the scoring but made it 3-0 on an error with two outs later in the frame.
- The hosts made it 5-0 one inning later, taking advantage of four errors in the frame. Central ended the scoring with a run in the fifth and sixth innings, getting a pair of RBI hits to extend its advantage to 7-0.
GAME TWO
COE 8 - CENTRAL 0 (5 Innings)
Game Facts
- The Kohawks quickly responded in the second game, scoring a pair of runs in the first two innings to jump ahead 4-0. Coe got three-straight base runners to start the game including an RBI single from Madi Parson as she drove home Heather Boeckenstedt. Coe then ran a double steal play which resulted in Parson being thrown out in a run-down but Natalie Blank scampered home on the play to make it 2-0.
- Coe added two more in the top of the second after White stranded a pair of runners in the bottom of the first. Nicki Wood drove home the first run of the frame, getting a one-out single to drive home Skyler Stookey. Coe again implemented the double steal play later in the inning as Wood successfully stole second, allowing Sarah Milks to score.
- The Kohawks ended the scoring in the top of the fourth inning, giving White plenty of insurance to clinch her 10th win of the season. Stookey doubled to lead off the inning and immediately scored on a single by Wood. The big blast of the game was delivered with two outs as Parson delivered a three-run homer, driving home Blank and Wood to push the lead to 8-0. White returned to the circle for the fourth and fifth innings looking to wrap up the win and the freshman delivered a pair of scoreless frames, recording five fly outs to end the game.
Up next: Coe will play one final non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, May 3 when it travels to Millikin University for a matchup at 2 PM.
