Baseball Wins Third Straight at A-R-C Tournament, Progresses to Championship Series

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The fifth-seeded Coe College baseball team picked up its third-straight victory at the American Rivers Conference tournament, defeating second-seeded Loras College 11-3 to advance into Saturday's championship series. The Kohawks displayed another complementary effort, scoring 11 runs on 13 hits to back up an impressive starting pitching effort from Tyce Johnson. Johnson pitched 4.2 innings, allowing just six hits and three runs while striking out four. Tyler Riebhoff came into the game in the fourth in relief of Johnson and earned his first win of the season, pitching 3.1 scoreless innings while surrendering one hit. The victory moves Coe to 20-19 on the season with it advancing into Saturday's A-R-C Championship Series.

  • It was a slower start for Coe in its third game of the tournament with the contest going scoreless over the first two innings. The Kohawks opened the scoring in the top of the third inning, getting a pair of runs on one hit. Jack Allison led the inning off with a single and was quickly joined on base by Tyler Elliott. Two batters later, Mitchell Eckardt reached on an error by the second basemen, allowing Allison to cross home to make it 1-0. TJ Johnson then picked up the second RBI of the inning, grounding out to second base while allowing Elliott to score from third. Coe added another run in the top of the fourth inning with two outs as Allison drove home Jacob Brosius with an RBI single. 
  • The lead grew for the Kohawks in the top of the fifth inning, getting three runs on three hits and one error. Eckardt reached on a one-out single and was immediately driven in on an RBI double to right-center. Coe added two more runs in the inning with some clutch two-out plays, getting an RBI single from Creighton Kreshel to make it 5-0. Brosius reached safely in Coe's next at-bat after an error by the pitcher, moving runners onto the corners. The Kohawks then implemented the double-steal play, getting their sixth run as Brosius was caught in a rundown while Kreshel took home. 
  • Loras finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, slicing Coe's lead to three runs thanks to four hits in the frame. Riebhoff entered the game with two outs in the inning and a runner on second but the righty got an inning-ending lineout to keep Coe in front 6-3. The Kohawks restored a six-run lead in the top of the seventh, getting three hits including a pair of RBI hits. TJ Johnson tripled with one out and immediately scored, advancing home on a passed ball. TJ Deardorff made it 8-3 later in the inning, singling down the left-field line to drive home Reid Rausch. Allison then picked up an RBI, singling up the middle to score Kreshel.
  • Riebhoff kept Loras quiet in the bottom of the seventh and the bottom of the eighth, sending the game to the top of the ninth with Coe in front 9-3. The Kohawks added two more insurance runs in the away half of the ninth, getting a pair of RBI hits from Elliott and James VanHooser who gave Coe an 11-3 lead. Austin Divello came in for the bottom of the ninth and the sophomore pitched a scoreless frame, scattering just two hits while clinching the win. 
Up next: The Kohawks will take on the winner of tomorrow's game nine between Loras College and the remaining team from this evening's loser bracket matchup between Buena Vista and Wartburg.
