Baseball Defeats Lawrence in First Elimination Game, Drops Second with UW-Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The Coe College baseball team saw its 2022 season come to a close on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Coe won its first elimination game over Lawrence University on Saturday morning before suffering the season-ending defeat to UW-Stevens Point. The Kohawks staved off elimination in their opening game of the day, defeating Lawrence University 6-1. Coe got an impressive pitching effort from Tyce Johnson, who allowed just four hits in six innings en route to his third win. Offensively, the Kohawks got three RBI from TJ Deardorff and two from Jack Allison with Deardorff blasting a two-run homer in the eighth. Stevens Point had control of the second elimination game of the day, getting nine runs in the opening four innings. Coe continued to battle, scoring a pair of runs in the second inning but UWSP held its advantage until the eighth. The Kohawks fought back in the frame with three runs, getting a pair of homers from TJ Johnson and Creighton Kreshel but Stevens Point got the final six outs to secure the victory. Coe ends the season 22-21 overall while Stevens Point improves to 36-8 on the year.

GAME ONE
COE 6 - LAWRENCE 1
Game Facts
  • Lawrence got a base runner to open the game after an error from the Kohawks but Tyce Johnson buckled down, picking off the runner at first before retiring two straight. The Vikings again threatened in the top of the third, getting a pair of base runners to start the inning thanks to a pair of Coe errors. Lawrence then loaded the bases on a seeing-eye bunt-single but Johnson stayed calm and got out of the jam with a strikeout and an inning-ending double play.
  • The Kohawks' first scoring chance came in the bottom of the third, getting a lead-off single from Tyler Elliott before a sacrifice by James VanHooser moved him to second. Mitchell Eckardt put runners on the corners in the next at-bat with a single to right but back-to-back outs ended Coe's chance to take the lead.
  • The Vikings again put pressure on Johnson in the top of the fifth, putting runners on second and third with one out. The sophomore escaped the jam once again, using a strikeout and a groundout to keep the game scoreless.
  • Coe finally opened the scoring in the bottom of the sixth, getting a pair of runs on two hits. Creighton Kreshel reached on a free pass to start the frame and was later joined by Jack Allison, who singled to left-center. TJ Deardorff drove home the first RBI of the inning with a safety squeeze, laying down a perfect sacrifice bunt, allowing Kreshel to scamper home. Elliott added to the lead with an RBI single off the third-base bag, pushing Allison across the plate while making it 2-0.
  • The Kohawks added some key insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth after Ethan O'Donnell worked a perfect top half in relief of Coe's starter. Coe started the rally with back-to-back singles from Kreshel and Jacob Brosius, with the latter moving to second on his single-season, record-tying 25th stolen base. Allison then drove home both runners to make it 4-1, singling through the left side of the infield. Coe got two more insurance runs in the next at-bat as TJ Deardorff blasted a two-run homer to left field, driving home Allison for a 6-1 lead. O'Donnell returned to the mound for the final three outs for Coe and the freshman stranded a leadoff double with three-consecutive outs to keep the Kohawks alive in the tournament.

GAME TWO
UW-STEVENS POINT 10 - COE 5
Game Facts
  • The Pointers opened the scoring in the win-or-go-home matchup, getting a solo homer in the first inning. Stevens Point added three more runs in the next inning, using a two-out, three-run shot to left field to take a 4-0 advantage.
  • Coe answered back in the bottom of the second, getting two runs on one big blast. Kreshel singled to lead off the inning and moved to third after a balk and groundout. Allison then sliced the deficit in half, smashing a two-run homer to left field to make it 4-2.
  • UWSP got the runs immediately back in the top of the third, scoring two on a pair of hits and one Kohawk error. The Pointers led off with a homer and later got a two-out RBI single to center, restoring a four-run advantage. The regional hosts added three more runs in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to seven, getting a pair of one-out RBI hits and a sacrifice fly.  The Pointers added another insurance run in the top of the seventh, getting a two-out double to extend the advantage to eight.
  • Coe struck back in the bottom of the eighth, getting three runs on three hits to slice the deficit to five. TJ Johnson hit a solo homer in his final Kohawk at-bat before Kreshel blasted a two-run shot to left, scoring Reid Rausch. UW-Stevens Point escaped any further damage in the inning and took a five-run lead into the ninth. The advantage proved enough for the Pointers who turned to a reliever for the final three outs of the game.
