MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Coe College wrestling team earned the team championship at Cornell's Cliff Keen-Mike Duroe Invite on Saturday while four Kohawks earned individual titles to highlight the day.
Cade Hornback, Will Esmoil, Tristin Westphal and
Kaleb Reeves all claimed individual titles for the Kohawks, leading the team to a total score of 214.5, over 60 points ahead of second-place Augsburg. Hornback was 5-0 on the day, picking up three pins and a pair of sudden-victory wins, including a 4-2 decision in the first-place match to claim the title. Esmoil began his tournament with three-straight falls and went on to pick up a 5-1 decision in the semifinal before claiming the 165-pound title from a medical forfeit. Westphal earned a bye in the first round but was ready for his first chances, picking up back-to-back falls to reach the semifinal where he earned a major decision, advancing to the final. In the 184 final, Westphal secured another major decision, defeating his opponent 11-3 to claim the title. Reeves capped off his first tournament of the season in style, picking up a pair of falls en route to the heavyweight title.
Alex Friddle, Bryce Parke and
Jared Voss also turned in impressive performances for Coe, finishing second in their respective brackets after defeats in the championship match.
Jaiden Moore, Riley Wright and
Mathieu Arsenault rounded out the podium finishes for the Kohawks, finishing third at 125, 149 and 197.
