MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team defeated Cornell College 78-64 on Wednesday evening in team's season opener. Coe, which earned a Bremner Cup point for the year-long series, dominated the opening half against its local rival, outscoring the hosts 42-30 while shooting over 50 percent from the floor. The Rams made a run early in the second half, cutting Coe's lead to two midway through the period.
Cael Schmitt and
TJ Schnurr took over for the remainder of the contest, combining for 15 points in the final 10 minutes. In total, Schmitt and Schnurr scored 49 of Coe's 78 points, going for 26 and 23 respectively.
Bennett Sherry was just shy of double-digits, scoring nine points while stuffing the stat sheet with six boards, four steals and three blocks.

- Coe got off to the perfect start, scoring on two of its first three possessions before a short scoring lull in the early going. The teams settled in and picked up the scoring around the 16-minute mark but the Kohawks outscored Cornell 12-6 during the stretch thanks in part to seven points from Schmitt. The lead began to grow midway through the half with Coe ripping off another big run, extending the lead to 30-16 with 6:15 left in the first. Cornell kept within striking distance over the final minutes of the half, narrowly outscoring Coe 14-12 to trail 42-30 at the break. The hosts took advantage of the home court and were hot to start the second half, quickly slicing the Coe lead to 57-55 with 9:55 to play. Despite the surge, Coe hung tough, answering with a speedy 11-4 spurt in just over two minutes to regain control. Schmitt, who hit one three during the momentum-shifting run struck again moments later, splashing in two more 3s to push the lead back to double-digits at 73-61. Schnurr closed the deal for good in the final two minutes, converting a pair of buckets to end any further comeback hopes for Cornell.
Up next: Coe returns to the court on Saturday evening, hosting its first home game of the year against Ripon College at 5 PM.
