Schnurr, Schmitt & Nailor hit double-digits, Men’s Basketball extends streak to five with win over Buena Vista

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The (RV) Coe College men's basketball team picked up its fifth consecutive win on Saturday afternoon, defeating Buena Vista University 78-66 at Kohawk Arena. The win, which moves Coe to 3-0 in A-R-C action, featured the hosts leading from the early moments and never looking back, holding the advantage for nearly 37 of the 40 minutes. The Kohawks were led by a trio of double-digit scorers as TJ Schnurr logged his second-straight 20-point game with 20 and seven boards. The senior was joined by Cael Schmitt (16) and Cooper Nailor (12) in double-figures with the pair providing strong secondary options for the Kohawks. Bennett Sherry (8), Ryan Dolphin (8), Josh Schloe (7) and John Steffen completed a well-rounded scoring effort for Coe, helping the team shoot 53.4 percent in total.

GAME FACTS
  • Coe scored the first point of the game from the free throw line and later took a two-point lead on a 3 from Nailor, going up 4-2. The sophomore guard continued his hot start over the next few minutes, leading Coe a four-point lead at 18-14 as he scored seven points in a five-minute stretch. BVU quickly closed the gap to just one with a 3 but Coe answered, putting together a 12-6 spurt in the next four minutes to grab a 30-23 advantage with 7:43 left in the opener. BVU refused to fall further behind, scraping out a 10-7 run in the next five minutes to make it a four-point game with under three in the half. Schmitt and Sherry dominated the final moments of the half to give their team a 15-point lead at the break, contributing to a 13-2 period-ending run to put Coe up 50-35. The Kohawks pulled further away in the second half, scoring eight of the first 10 points to grab a 21-point advantage. The Beavers fought hard despite the large deficit, chipping away with an 18-10 run during the next eight minutes. Coe put the game away for good with about seven minutes left in the game, ripping off a 10-4 stretch to regain a comfortable advantage. 
 
Up next: The Kohawks will play their final Division I exhibition game of the season before returning to regular-season action, taking on Western Illinois in Macomb, Illinois on December 6 at 7 PM.
