Schnurr’s overtime tip-in gives men’s basketball win over Central in heavyweight conference clash

Box Score PELLA, Iowa - The (RV) Coe College men's basketball team stayed unbeaten in American Rivers Conference play on Saturday afternoon, picking up a dramatic 85-83 victory over defending regular-season A-R-C champion (RV) Central College. Coe and Central battled throughout the matchup but a late Dutch flurry in regulation gave the hosts an eight-point advantage with 1:32 left to play. The Kohawks erased the deficit in incredible fashion, getting a 9-1 run before the end of regulation as Cael Schmitt tied the game with eight seconds to play. The overtime period featured more back-and-forth action, with each team taking slim leads along the way. Coe had the likely final possession of overtime after a pair of free throws from Central with 26 seconds but a mishandling of the ball forced a late timeout with just over one second left on the clock. Head Coach Bryan Martin then drew up an inbounds play in the huddle for TJ Schnurr, getting the senior forward an inch of space inside the paint for a tip-in chance that hit off the iron numerous times before falling in for the eventual game-winning bucket. Schmitt and Schnurr were again the mainstays for the Kohawk offense in the win, scoring 28 and 22 respectively while shooting 50 percent from the floor.

Central grabbed the first two-possession lead of the contest over the next 3:29, using a 9-2 run to take a 20-16 lead with 11:15. The Kohawks quickly stormed back and ripped off nine unanswered points, flipping the score in its favor at 25-20. Central clapped back with an unanswered run of its own, scoring 12 consecutive points during the ensuing four minutes of action to regain a 32-25 lead with five minutes remaining in the half. Another scoreless stretch broke out for the Dutch in the following two minutes as Coe scored another nine points in a row, regaining two-point lead with 3:11 in the first. Central ended the period with four points of its own, getting two free throws and a bucket from Joshua Van Gorp to hold a slim 36-34 lead after 20 minutes. The opening 10 minutes of the second half was more of the same as each team scored 17 points, trading buckets throughout the span. Central put its foot on the gas at the midway mark of the period, getting an 18-12 run before the one-minute mark to take a 71-63 advantage. Coe pulled of a miracle in the final 1:22, getting an incredible 9-1 run that included five points in 10 seconds. The magic continued into the overtime period for the Kohawks who held a slim lead for a handful of possessions but two free throws knotted the score at 83 with 26 seconds left. After what looked like missed opportunity, Coe was forced into a timeout with just over a second to go, knowing only a tip-in would get the job done. Schnurr continued his clutch performances for the Kohawks with a prayer from a few feet out, catching and shooting all in one motion to give his team the victory.
