STORM LAKE, Iowa - The Coe College men's basketball team suffered a 79-77 defeat to Buena Vista on Saturday afternoon. The Kohawks fell behind quickly in the opening half, spotting the hosts a 13-point advantage just over seven minutes into the contest. Coe settled into the game and went back and forth with the Beavers for the remainder of the half but BVU held a 46-34 lead after 20 minutes. The Kohawks quickly clawed back in the second half, using an early 22-13 run to pull within three points of the lead with just under 13 minutes to play. The teams went back and forth during the final stretch of the contest but Coe finally tied the game with under two minutes to play on a crucial 3. After one-plus minute of scoreless action, the Beavers hit the game-winning shot, getting a layup with seven seconds left to play. The Kohawks had one final chance as time expired but a potential game-winning 3 came up empty. The Coe offense was led by
TJ Schnurr who scored a career-high 25 points while pulling down seven boards.
Cael Schmitt was the other player to hit double digits, posting 21 points with four boards, four assists and four steals. With the loss, Coe drops to 11-11 overall and 5-8 in the league while Buena Vista improves to 8-13 and 2-11 in the A-R-C.

BUENA VISTA 79 - COE 77
- BVU was on fire to start the game, opening with a 14-2 run in the first four minutes of action. Coe settled in, getting a 3 from Schnurr to slow the momentum momentarily. The Beavers refused to slow down, responding with another run, this time outscoring Coe 9-3 over the next 2:37 to extend its lead to 23-8. Coe quickly got back within touching distance, scoring five-straight points to pull back to within 10 midway through the half.
- The squads went back and forth over the next few possessions yet the Beavers continued to hold the momentum, edging Coe 12-7 to reestablish a 15-point advantage. The Kohawks ended the period with a strong stretch, outscoring Buena Vista 14-11 over the final five minutes of the half to make it 46-34 after 20 minutes.
- The Kohawks came to life at the beginning of the second half, starting the frame with a quick 9-5 run to slice the deficit to eight. BV hung tough, answering with a quick 8-5 run to regain a double-digit lead at 59-48 with 14:19 left. Coe then ripped off a big spurt, putting together a 12-5 run over the next four minutes to make it 64-60 halfway through the period.
- The Beavers again answered the call, reestablishing a 10-point lead with six-straight in under two minutes. Coe refused to quit, clapping back with another 12-5 spurt in just under six minutes of game time. Schnurr led the charge, scoring five points along the way while Schmitt, Tyson Gage, Ryan Dolphin and John Steffen all had two each to pull the Kohawks within three. Buena Vista pushed its lead back to two possessions following the run but Coe continued to climb back, getting a layup from Greg Hall and a 3 from Schnurr to tie the game at 77 with 1:47 to play. The game went scoreless for over a minute until the Beavers hit the final bucket of the game, converting the game-winning layup with just seven seconds remaining. Coe had one final chance on a possible game-winning 3 but Schmitt's try came up empty and the Beavers hung on for the win.
