ORLANDO, Fla. - The Coe College baseball team picked up the fourth win of its Florida trip on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Wisconsin La Crosse 5-2 in a nine-inning contest. Freshman pitcher
Matthew Chapman picked up his second Florida victory in as many starts for the Kohawks, allowing just one earned run and four hits in six innings of work. The Santa Clarita, California native struck out eight Eagle hitters on the day and retired the side in three of his six frames. The Kohawk offense backed up their starter, racking up a season-high 12 hits en route to the victory. All nine Coe starting hitters reached base safely in the game and three players had multi-hit games with
Mitchell Eckardt, Gavin Guns and
Tyler Bayless recording at least two knocks. The Kohawks racked up six extra-base hits in the win and saw five different players register an RBI in a total team effort. With the win, Coe improves to 5-4 on the season while UW-La Crosse falls to 1-2.

Game Facts
- Coe started quickly in the nine-inning matchup, pushing three runs home in the bottom of the first. Eckardt led the inning off with a double to left and quickly moved to third on a single from Jake Brosius. The opening run came around to score on an error by the UWL shortstop in the next at-bat, allowing Eckardt to make it 1-0. Coe did its own damage before the end of the inning, getting a pair of RBI hits from Tyce Johnson and Bayless who drove home one run each with a double and single respectively.
- Chapman did his job in the top of the second, coming up with a crucial shut-down inning for Coe as he retired UWL in order. Both offenses went quietly over the next few innings with Chapman remaining in command until the top of the fifth. The Eagles got their lone run of Coe's starter thanks to a pair of leadoff hits, stringing together a double and RBI single to cut the deficit to two. Chapman eliminated any further threat despite the shaky start to the inning, registering three-straight outs to leave a runner in scoring position.
- The Kohawks added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings, adding one in each to pad the advantage. Reid Rausch continued his solid start to the season in the seventh with a two-out triple, driving home Guns who had reached earlier on a fielder's choice. The final Kohawk run came on a bases-loaded walk from Eckardt, forcing Creighton Kreshel home to make it 5-1.
- Coe's freshman hurler handed the ball off to the pen in the top of the seventh and the back end of the staff didn't let him down as Jacob Schmit and Austin Divello combined to allow just one run in the final three innings. Schmitt worked a perfect seventh and eighth inning before running into a small jam in the ninth. Divello then entered with two outs in the inning and got the final tally for Coe, inducing a popup to third to secure the victory.
Up next: The Kohawks take tomorrow off and return to action on Friday for another non-conference doubleheader against Crown College at 1:45 PM CT.
