CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team split a doubleheader against Central College on Friday afternoon, winning 13-3 in the opening game before dropping an 11-9 decision in the second contest of the day. Coe was impressive in the opening game, getting 13 runs on 17 hits while holding the Dutch to just three runs on seven hits.
Tyce Johnson picked up his third win of the season on the mound for Coe, pitching six strong innings while allowing just two earned runs. Six Kohawks had multi-hit efforts in the opening game while
Gavin Guns and
Creighton Kreshel led the team with three knocks each.
Jake Brosius, who recorded a pair of hits in the game, scored three runs and recorded a team-high three RBI. Coe took the lead early in game two, getting a pair of runs in the first and third innings. Central rallied late in the contest, scoring two runs in the seventh and ninth while exploding for five runs in the eighth. Coe finished with 12 hits in the game but made four errors as the Dutch secured a split in the conference-opening doubleheader. With the results, Coe moves to 9-5 overall and 1-1 in the A-R-C while Central goes to 7-6 and 1-1.

- Both teams threatened in the opening two innings, putting runners on base but the starting pitchers avoided early damage and kept the game scoreless. The Dutch took the lead in the top of the third, getting two runs on one hit and one Kohawk error. Johnson allowed a leadoff baserunner and later surrendered a one-out single to spot Central a 1-0 advantage. The second run of the inning scored on an error from Coe however Johnson ended the inning with an important strikeout to limit the damage. The Kohawks quickly responded in their half of the inning, scoring three runs on three hits to grab a lead and momentum. Gavin Guns walked with one down and was immediately driven home by Jake Brosius who doubled to right-center. Kevin Lamb secured the second RBI of the inning one batter later, producing a sacrifice fly to score Brosius who had stolen third during the at-bat. Tyler Elliott gave the Kohawks their first lead of the game with two outs, doubling home Creighton Kreshel who reached previously with a single.
- The Kohawks added to their lead in the fourth, scoring three more on five hits. Coe did all its damage with two outs, seeing its first two hitters retired quickly. Mitchell Eckardt started the party with a solo homer and was later followed by Brosius who delivered a two-run bomb to make it 6-2. Central got one back in the top of the fifth, using a two-out single to slice the deficit to three.
- Coe responded in a major way in the bottom, breaking the game open with seven runs on eight hits. Joey Sartain brought home the first run of the inning, driving home Daniel Hawes with a double just three batters into the inning. Eckardt picked up another RBI following a Dutch pitching change, singling through the left side to plate Jack Allison. Eckardt scored in the next at-bat, trotting home as Guns made it 10-3 with a double to right. Lamb picked up another RBI later in the frame, recording a double to right to push Brosius across the plate. Kreshel put an exclamation mark on the inning in the next plate appearance, blasting a two-run homer to extend the lead to 13-3. Johnson came back into the game in the top of the sixth and worked his way around a leadoff single, inducing a double play in his final inning of work. Nolan Schroeder entered for Coe in the top of the seventh and allowed a two-out single but the freshman got a game-ending 5-4-3 double play to secure the victory.

- Coe quickly jumped in front in the second game, scoring two runs on three hits in the first. Eckardt led off with a walk and stole second but the Dutch got two quick outs to put pressure on the Kohawks. The hosts cashed in despite the two-out scenario, getting a pair of RBI hits from Kreshel and Tyler Bayless who put the Kohawks up 2-0. Coe added two more in the third inning, getting three hits en route to a 4-0 lead. Guns scored the opening run on a wild pitch before Bayless secured his second RBI of the game on a two-out infield single.
- Central got on the board in the fifth, slicing the Coe lead in half on a two-out double that scored two runs. The Kohawks had an immediate response in the bottom of the frame, getting both runs back to restore a four-run lead. Kreshel led off with a double and later scored on another hit from Bayless who registered his third RBI of the game.
- The Dutch refused to go down without a fight, pulling within two runs again in the top of the seventh on a pair of two-out RBI hits. Coe continued to have an answer for the visitors, scoring three runs on just one hit in the bottom of the inning. Elliott had the big hit in the inning, picking up a two-RBI single to push the lead to 8-4. Coe's final run of the game came from another wild pitch, extending the advantage to 9-4 as Bayless scored from third. Central didn't blink despite its largest deficit of game two, tying the game with five runs on four hits in the top of the eighth. The Dutch got two runs early in the frame and later added three more runs with two outs. Garrett Finley came in clutch for Central, crushing a two-run homer to dead-center that tied the game at nine. The Dutch finished the job in the ninth, getting two more runs on one hit and two Coe errors as Central secured the split.
