WAVERLY, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team fell just short in the series opener at Wartburg, dropping a 2-1 decision against the Knights on Friday evening. The Kohawks struggled at the plate against the Knight pitching staff, managing just one hit against five different pitchers for the hosts. Matthew Chapman scattered five hits in six innings of work as Coe's starting pitcher. The Knights finally claimed victory in the 11th inning, scoring the game-winning run on a wild pitch. The result moves Coe to 10-6 overall and 2-2 in the league while Wartburg improves to 7-8 and 2-4 in the A-R-C.

- Wartburg struck first, scoring one in the fourth inning on a pair of hits. The Knights got a lead-off single and quickly moved the runner to second on a sacrifice bunt. The hosts got the game-opening run on a wild pitch from the Kohawks, taking a 1-0 lead with one-out. Coe knotted the game in the top of the sixth, getting one run after some errant pitching from the Knights. The Kohawks took advantage of two hit batters and two walks, getting an RBI from Kaden Haller to tie the game at one.
- The Knights threatened to regain the lead in the eighth, putting a pair of runners on base with two outs but Jack Allison was able to pitch his way out of a jam to kepe the game tied. Wartburg finally broke though in the 11th, scoring the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
Up next: Coe is back in action tomorrow for the final two games of the series, taking on Wartburg in a doubleheader at 1 PM in Waverly.
