Baseball Completes Series Sweep at Simpson Behind Chapman & Johnson’s Strong Starts

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team completed the series sweep over Simpson College on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Storm 7-5 in game one and 4-0 in game two. Coe, which extends its current winning streak to four, got two solid starting pitching performances from Matthew Chapman and Tyce Johnson. Both Kohawks worked six-plus innings on the day, combining to allow just three earned runs en route to the sweep. Creighton Kreshel powered Coe's offense in the opener, going 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and a double. Tyler Elliott also continued his solid recent form, registering a pair of RBI. The Kohawks piled on 12 hits in game two but only managed four runs, getting RBI from four different players. Kreshel and Elliot again started the scoring for Coe in the first and were later joined by Jake Brosius and Tyler Bayless who each produced RBI singles. Johnson picked up his fourth win of the season in dominant fashion, allowing just two hits in seven scoreless innings. In the games, Brosius set a new single-season record for steals, reaching 28 for the season which breaks his own mark of 25 set in 2022. With the sweep, Coe improves to 17-14 overall and 9-9 in the A-R-C while Simpson drops to 14-20 and 4-14 in the league.

GAME ONE
COE 7 - SIMPSON 5
Game Facts
  • Coe had a strong start to the opening game, getting two runs in the opening inning on a two-out RBI double from Kreshel. The visitors added another insurance run in the third, getting two hits and one run to extend the advantage to three. Tyler Elliott came up with the RBI in the inning, recording a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to score Jack Allison
  • Simpson finally got to Kohawk starter Matthew Chapman in the fifth, getting one run on one hit as the Storm used a two-out double to cut into the lead. Coe threatened to respond in the sixth, getting runners on the corner with two down but a failed double-steal attempt ended the chance.
  • The Kohawks stretched the lead again in the seventh, adding two runs on one hit and an error. Mitchell Eckardt secured the RBI for Coe, singling to right with runners on first and second. Simpson made a throwing error on the play, allowing another run to score as Coe took a 5-1 advantage.
  • Simpson quickly answered in the home half to stay in the game, getting two runs on a two-out single to chase Chapman from the game. Coe found another answer to the Simpson rally in the eighth, getting two more insurance runs to regain a four-run lead. Elliott picked up his second RBI of the game with another sacrifice fly before Kreshel delivered a one-out single to score Reid Rasuch. The Kohawks ran into trouble in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with no outs but Noalan Schroeder entered from the bullpen and limited the damage to just two with a double play groundout and a strikeout. Schroeder remained in the game for the bottom of the ninth, earning his first save of the year while scattering a one-out single.

GAME TWO
COE 4 - SIMPSON 0
Game Facts
  • The Kohawks struck immediately in the opener, getting a two-out single from Brosius before a triple from Kreshel. Elliott made it back-to-back RBI hits for Coe one batter later, driving home Kreshel with a single to left. The visitors doubled the lead in the second, again striking with two outs in the frame. Kaden Haller reached on an error to lead off and moved to third with two outs. Brosius came through for Coe with his 25th RBI of the year, singling right to score Haller.
  • Johnson ran into trouble in the fourth as Simpson got a two-out walk and single to load the bases. The Kohawk junior buckled down and avoided any damage, inducing a groundout to keep the lead at three. Coe got its starter another insurance run in the sixth as Bayless delivered another clutch two-out hit, singling home Haller for his second run of the day. Johnson handed the ball to Jack Allison for the final six out and Coe's reliever did his job, working around a leadoff single in the eighth before retiring six-straight Simpson hitters.

Up next: Coe returns to the diamond on Friday, April 28 at 3 PM, hosting Nebraska Wesleyan in the first of a three-game set at Bill Quinby Field.
