CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team returned to winning ways on Friday afternoon at Bill Quinby Field, defeating the University of Dubuque 8-0 in the opening game of a three-game set. Freshman pitcher
Matthew Chapman turned in his best collegiate start to date, tossing eight shutout innings for his third win of the year while racking up six strikeouts.
Jake Brosius was one of three Kohawks to finish with multiple hits, registering a triple and a homer with four RBI. Coe took an early lead, scoring two in the second inning. Brosius picked up his first RBI in the third on a triple to right before
Creighton Kreshel extended the lead to 4-0.
Mitchell Eckardt made it 5-0 later in the sixth inning before Brosius capped off the impressive day with a three-run blast to right, his fourth homer of the year. Coe improves to 12-9 with and victory and 4-5 in the A-R-C while UD drops to 15-6 and 5-5 in the league.

- UD got two runners on in the first inning, reaching with a walk and a single but Chapman escaped the jam with a groundout and flyout. The freshman surrendered another one-out hit in the second but again had an answer, getting the final two batters in order to keep the game scoreless. The Kohawks opened the scoring in their half of the second, getting one hit and two runs to jump ahead. Kreshel and Tyler Elliott reached on free passes to start the inning before Reid Rausch drove home Kreshel to make it 1-0. Kaden Haller registered the final RBI of the frame, grounding out to shortstop to plate Elliott from third.
- Coe got more insurance for Chapman in the third, pushing two more across on four hits. Eckardt led off with a double and scored on the Brosius triple. Kreshel picked up a crucial one-out hit in the next plate appearance, doubling to left to score Brosius. Both teams went quiet in the fifth but the Kohawks once again extended the lead in the sixth. Haller led off with a single and quickly moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from James VanHooser. Eckardt made it 5-0 in the next chance, doubling home Haller for his 18th RBI of the year. Brosius put the icing on the cake later in the frame, smoking a three-run bomb to right field to clear the bases and end the scoring. Chapman faced the minimum in the seventh and eighth innings before turning it over to Austin Divello who entered the game and worked a perfect 1-2-3 inning to clinch the victory.
Up next: Coe completes the doubleheader tomorrow afternoon, taking on the Spartans at 1 PM at Bill Quinby Field.
