(RV) Men’s Basketball gets back on track with dominant display at Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa - The (RV) Coe College men's basketball team returned to winning ways after having its lengthy winning streak snapped on Sunday, leading wire-to-wire in a dominant 82-50 victory over Wartburg College. The Kohawks were on fire from the opening tip, shooting 59.4 percent in the first half while hitting 10 3s. Coe limited the Knights to just 20 points in the opening 20 minutes, holding the hosts to 9-of-25 shooting with six turnovers. The Kohawks continued the strong play in the second half, hitting 48 percent of their shots en route to their 15th win of the season. TJ Schnurr posted a game-high 20 points with eight boards and two assists while Cael Schmitt turned in 17 points and six rebounds. 14 different players scored points in the game as Coe shot 54.4 percent, its second best performance of the season.

  • Coe and Wartburg traded baskets in the early minutes, each scoring four points in the first few possessions. The Kohawks took control during the next seven minutes, ripping off an 20-4 run that featured six points from Schnurr and four each for Bennett Sherry, Schmitt and John Steffen. Wartburg stayed in the game with a quick 7-3 run during the next two minutes, pulling back within 12 points at the seven-minute mark of the first. Coe pulled away with five minutes left in the half, ending the period on a 17-0 spurt that featured five 3s including three from Schnurr, and one from from Aaron Foote and Tre McCrary. The Kohawks continued to push their lead in the second half, starting the period with a 13-8 stretch to make it 63-28. The Knights and Kohawks traded buckets over the closing ten minutes of the game as Coe turned to its bench to close out the final stretch of the victory. 
 
Up next: Coe heads back to the road for the next contest, taking on Buena Vista on Saturday, January 20 at 4 PM in Storm Lake.
