Balanced offensive attack pushes Men’s Basketball to victory over Simpson

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The (RV) Coe College men's basketball team bounced back for a dominant 80-62 victory over Simpson College on Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena. The Kohawks opened the game on top, starting with 13 points in the opening three minutes. The lead continued to grow throughout the first half with the hosts extending their advantage to 15 before the end of the first half. Coe kept its foot on the gas in the second half, pushing the lead in the early moments. Simpson refused to go away and cut the deficit over the next few minutes, using a 22-11 run to pull within eight with seven minutes to play. The Kohawks finished the job in emphatic fashion, regaining control with 13 unanswered points to take a 21-point lead late in the half. Coe's offense was impressive throughout, shooting 47.5 percent from the floor and 17-of-21 from the free throw line. TJ Schnurr (16), Cael Schmitt (15), Brady Klahn (14), Cooper Nailor (13) and Bennett Sherry led a balanced attacked for the Kohawks, each hitting double figures in the win. Sherry stuffed the stat sheet for the Kohawks, finishing with an additional seven boards, five assists, five steals and two blocks. Schmitt matched Sherry's five steals and chipped in with three assists and one block. Klahn fell just one point shy of his career high, shooting 4-of-6 from deep while adding a fast-break dunk late in the contest.

  • Coe got the perfect start to the game, scoring 13 of the opening 15 points to grab an early double-digit lead. Simpson slowly got back into the game, cutting the lead to single digits at 21-12 with 11:12 left in the period. The Kohawks again pulled away during the next phase, ripping off a quick 9-3 stretch to take a 30-15 advantage. Simpson controlled the following two minutes, answering the Coe run with a 9-1 spurt of its own, pulling back within seven at 31-24. The Kohawks restored a comfortable lead before the halftime horn, scoring nine of the final 10 points in the period to take a 40-25 advantage into the break. Coe quickly extended its lead in the second half, pushing the margin to 19 points at 52-33 with four minutes gone in the period. The Storm remained engaged despite the deficit, making things interesting again with a 15-6 run to pull within 10 points with just over 10 minutes to play. The visitors cut further into Coe's lead during the next few minutes, hitting a 3 with 7:02 to play to make it 63-55. The Kohawks regained control of the contest in the moments following a timeout, scoring 13 unanswered points before the four-minute mark, extending the lead to 21 at 76-55. Coe cruised in the final few minutes of the contest, turning to the reserves for the final two minutes of action.
