Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball falls just short in back and forth matchup with Gustavus

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College men's basketball team came up just short in its final non-conference game of the season on Monday evening at Kohawk Arena, falling 78-75 to the Gustavus Adolphus Golden Gusties. The matchup, Coe's final of the 2024 calendar year, was fiercely competitive throughout with the lead changing five times. Both squads held 10-point leads in the game but Gustavus outscored Coe 44-35 in the final period to pull out the victory. The Golden Gusties outscored Coe 37-21 in the opening 15 minutes of the second half to take a 10-point lead with 14:25 to play but the hosts refused to give in. The Kohawks closed the gap to two with 35 seconds to play and had a chance to tie the game as the buzzer sounded but a 3-point attempt from Bennett Sherry just missed as the visitors held on. Sherry scored a new career-high 32 points in the game, adding eight steals, six rebounds, five blocks and three assists. Cole Hrubes was the only other player to hit double-digits, scoring 13 points with three rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

GAME FACTS
  • The Kohawks got off to a perfect start, scoring 11 of the first 15 points as Sherry poured in seven early points. Gustavus controlled the next 8:16 of action, ripping off a 22-14 run to take a 26-25 lead with just over eight minutes left in the half. The Kohawks regained the momentum before the end of the half, ending the period with a 15-8 run to lead 40-34 after 20 minutes. Sherry and Hrubes combined for 11 points during the stretch while Cooper Nailor added a bucket. The teams traded buckets in the first four minutes of the second half but five unanswered points for the Kohawks made it 49-42 with 15:53 to play. The Gusties flipped the switch in the next seven-plus minutes, using a 22-5 run to take a 64-54 lead. The visitors held Coe to 2-of-11 from the floor during the spurt and went 8-of-19 and 3-of-6 from deep. Gustavus held off a quick run from Coe and later extended the lead to 10, hitting a clutch 3 to go up 71-61 with 4:25 to play. The Kohawks answered with an 11-3 run in the next 3:21, pulling to within two points as Sherry converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to make it 74-72. Gustavus gave Coe one final chance, turning the ball over in their own backcourt with less than 10 seconds after hounding pressure from the Kohawks. Sherry corralled a wild pass in the far corner with time ticking down and got off a solid shot but his shot missed as Gustavus hung on for the victory.
