CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Coe College baseball team wrapped up its first home series of 2024 on Saturday afternoon at Bill Quinby Field, splitting a pair of games with #25 Buena Vista. BVU took the opening game 8-7 despite being outhit 13-7 by Coe. The Beavers hit a pair of home runs including a go-ahead three-run blast in the sixth that gave the visitors the lead for good. The Kohawks bounced back in the final game of the three-game set, picking up a 6-1 victory to hand the Beavers their first conference loss of the year. The hosts got a strong starting effort from
Landon Moore who went 4.2 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out four. Moore was complimented by his offense that tallied nine hits overall including a first-inning grand slam from
Reid Rausch that gave Coe a 4-0 lead. The back end of the Kohawk bullpen put in solid work in the closing stretch of the game with
CJ Johnson, Adam Severson, Caden Richards and
Caden Evans combining to allow just one unearned run and six hits in the final four-plus innings.

- The Beavers did damage early on, getting a two-run homer just two batters in. Buena Vista proceeded to load the bases immediately after the dinger but only managed one more run as the Kohawks limited the big inning. Coe responded in the bottom half of the second, scoring twice on three hits. Jack Allison drove home Rausch with a sacrifice fly for the first run before a two-out single from Creighton Kreshel pulled Coe to within one. BVU extended the lead again to two in the top of the third, immediately answering with a sacrifice fly of its own for a 4-2 advantage. The Beavers handed the run back to Coe in the bottom of the inning, allowing Mitchell Eckardt to score the Kohawks' third run. The Kohawks got their big inning in the fifth, scoring three times on four hits to take a 6-4 advantage. Four straight hits to start the inning were highlighted by a Tyce Johnson RBI double to score Kreshel. Jon Wille and Jake Brosius then picked up RBI in back-to-back at-bats, singling home the first before a sacrifice fly made it 6-4. The Beavers weren't down for long, getting a three-run homer four batters into the sixth. The Beavers would add a key insurance run in the eighth with a two-out single from their cleanup hitter. Coe battled back in the bottom of the ninth inning, cutting the deficit to just one with a two-out RBI hit from Ryan Thoreson but BVU got a game-ending strikeout to secure the win.

- Coe quickly jumped ahead in the second game, taking advantage of two free passes to lead off the game. Brosius singled to load the bases and set the table for Rausch who smoked a liner over the left field fence to put his team up 4-0. Moore worked his second-straight 1, 2, 3 inning in the second and got some help from his defense in the third as a heads-up play from Kaden Haller cut down a runner trying to score from second on a throwing error from Coe. Buena Vista threatened in the seventh, loading the bases but Caden Richards managed to eliminate the scoring chance from the bullpen, retiring back-to-back hitters. The Kohawks added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to pad their lead, getting a one-out double from Wille to score Anthony Ranallo who pinch-ran for Daniel Hawes earlier in the inning. Buena Vista again put runners on in the eighth, scoring the lone run on a Kohawk error. Richards, who remained in the game for the eighth, again worked his way out of a jam, getting a strikeout and groundout to keep Coe's lead at four. Austin Gomez put the Kohawks back up five in the bottom of the eighth, driving home Jordan Joselit with a one-out single. Caden Evans got the ball to start the ninth and made no mistakes, working a 1, 2, 3 frame to lock down the victory.
Up Next: Coe is back in action on Tuesday for a single midweek game, traveling to Pella for a matchup with Central at 3 PM.
