Four-run ninth caps off Baseball's dramatic series-opening win at Nebraska Wesleyan

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Coe College baseball team won its sixth straight game in dramatic fashion on Friday afternoon, scoring four runs in the top of the ninth inning to cap off a 15-14 win in a back-and-forth contest. The Kohawks opened the scoring in the first but surrendered seven runs in the bottom of the inning thanks in part to three defensive miscues. The bats made up for the mistakes throughout the game, erasing the lead to take an 11-8 advantage in after the sixth inning. Nebraska Wesleyan continued the dramatics in the bottom of the eighth, scoring four runs with two outs to take a 14-11 lead. Coe immediately did its damage, tying the game six batters into the top of the inning with RBI from Jack Allison and Jack McMann. Evan Bender, who stranded two runners on to end the eighth inning, returned for the ninth and worked around a leadoff single to secure the win.

Gavin Guns, Wille and Jake Brosius all picked up RBI in the frame, helping cut the advantage to just three. Allison, who had four hits and five RBI to lead the team, picked up his first two of the game in the fourth, driving home Brosius and Wille to make it 7-6. NWU added one to its lead in the fifth, getting a two-out RBI to regain a multi-run lead. Coe exploded with five runs on four hits in the next inning, getting a two-run triple from Brosius to tie the game and a one-run single from Allison for a 9-8 lead. The inning was capped off with RBI later in the inning from Creighton Kreshel and Guns, each picking up one to put Coe up 11-8. NWU clawed one run closer in the seventh, getting a one-out RBI to make it a two-run game heading into the eighth. Coe threatened for insurance in the top of the eighth, getting runners on second and third with one out but NWU worked its way out of the jam. The hosts capitalized on the momentum and scored five two-out runs to flip the score and take a 14-11 lead. Wille, Brosius and Reid Rausch all reached after a leadoff strikeout for the Kohawks, loading the bases with one out for Allison. The senior third basemen came through clutch with a two-run single, cutting the lead to just one with runners on second and third. Jack McMann tied the game one batter later in a pinch-hit appearance, driving home Rausch with a sacrifice fly to make it 14-14. Kreshel put the ball in play for the eventual game-winning run, reaching on a defensive miscue that allowed Allison to score from third. Bender allowed a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth but quickly retired the next hitter. Coe's defense made up for some early mistakes in the next at-bat, throwing out the runner from first trying to steal second. Bender got the final out in style, striking out the final hitter looking for the win.

Up Next: Coe completes the weekend series with the Prairie Wolves tomorrow, Saturday, April 13 with a doubleheader beginning at 1 PM.
