Cedar Rapids, Iowa - The Coe College Overwatch team finished the Swiss Style portion of the Overwatch Collegiate Championships in 50th place to advance to the Group Stage of the tournament. Blizzard, the publisher of Overwatch, puts on two national tournaments a year, one in the Fall called Homecoming and another in the Spring called Overwatch Collegiate Championships (OWCC). This tournament is open to all colleges in the United States and Canada from Division 1 to Community Colleges. This Spring 355 teams across North America signed up to compete and see where they rank among the best teams in Collegiate Overwatch.
Coe College would start their Swiss portion of the tournament with a forfeit win against Purdue White. While it is nice to get a free win it did hurt their strength of schedule which helps determine your overall placement. In Round 2 Coe would get a 2-0 win over Northern Virginia Community College.
In the 2nd weekend of Swiss play your Kohawks had some tough luck. In swiss you play another team with the same record but it is random who you could get. In Round 3 Coe would have to take on Northeastern University who is currently ranked #20 in the nation. Coe would fall 0-2 in that match and then have to take on #14 ranked Fisher College Feins. Coe also dropped that match 0-2 to end weekend 2 at 2-2 in OWCC.
The third weekend was important to the Kohawks as they couldn't realistically drop any more games to have a chance at making the top 64. They opened play against University of South Carolina Black but they did not show up and Coe was awarded a forfeit win. In Round 6 Coe took on San Diego State and took home the 2-1 win.
Going into the final weekend Coe needed two wins to make the top 64. In Round 7 Coe took on Minnesota State Mankato and played an exceptional match and took the 2-0 win. In the final round your Kohawks took on Ball State. In the past Ball State has been a top 20 team but recently hasn't been as good but going into the match Coe was the underdog. Coe came out fast and took map number one and then took map two in Overtime!
Coe College would end Swiss play at 6-2 and in 50th place. Group play starts next Saturday and Sunday. Coe will be in Group B with #5 Winthrop, #6 Fisher Freaks, #11 Boise St, Briar Cliff, University of Pittsburgh, University of Cincinnati and Waterloo University from Canada.
