Baseball falls to UW-La Crosse in regional championship matchup

LA CROSSE, Wisc. - The Coe College baseball team dropped a pair of games to the University of Wisconsin La Crosse on Sunday, falling 18-11 in the opener and 9-7 in game two. La Crosse did early damage in game one, grabbing an 11-0 lead after four innings. The Kohawks clawed back with five in the fifth to make things interesting but UWL put the game away with three more runs in the seventh. Coe jumped out in front in game two with a pair of first-inning runs. La Crosse responded with eight unanswered runs including three in the bottom of the first. The Kohawks put together one final charge at the lead in the top of the eighth, scoring five runs to pull within one but the Eagles added an insurance run in the bottom and hung on the for the win. Coe, which falls one win shy of returning the super regional round,, ends the year with 31 victories, marking the first 30-win campaign since 2021.

  • La Crosse again started early in the opener, scoring once in the top of the second for a quick lead. The Eagles exploded for seven runs in the third, taking complete control at 8-0. UWL tacked on three in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth, keeping the pressure on Coe. The Kohawks answered with a five spot in the bottom of the fifth, reigniting some hopes as Ryan Thoreson delivered a three-run homer to make it 15-5. UWL put the game away in the next two innings, scoring three in the sixth and seventh. Coe continued to fight and clawed back six more runs but the Eagle lead proved too large to overcome.

  • Coe opened the scoring in game two, getting a clutch two-out hit from Ryan Thoreson to score Jake Brosius and Mitchell Eckardt. UWL answered in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on a Kohawk defensive miscue to put three on the board. The game went quiet for three innings until the fifth when La Crosse added another, taking a 4-2 lead with a solo homer. The Eagles put more on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring four times including a three-run homer to break it open. The Kohawks quickly responded to stay alive, scoring five in the top of the eighth to pull within one. Thoreson drove home the opening run of the inning, doubling home Tyce Johnson from first. UWL issued five free passes in a row to continue the rally for Coe which got RBI from Creighton Kreshel, pinch-hitter Daniel Hawes, Eckardt and Jon Wille. The Eagles restored a multi-run lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring once to go up 9-7. Coe brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth but a game-ending fly out sealed the game for UWL.
