Men’s Basketball falls at Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Coe College men's basketball team suffered a 77-69 defeat to the University of Dubuque on Wednesday evening. Coe and Dubuque traded strong runs during the opening half, each taking significant leads during the stretch. The Kohawks closed the period with six straight points in the final minute-plus, taking a 36-31 lead into the break. Coe pushed its lead to double-digits in the opening minutes of the second half, scoring five points to start the period. Dubuque owned the next 11-plus minutes of action, putting together a dominant 33-12 run to control the contest. UD shot 12-of-17 during the game-changing run, hitting 3 long-distance jumpers while going 6-of-7 from the line. Coe refused to go away, ripping off a 16-7 run to close the gap to two points with 1:36 to play. Dubuque secured the win in the final stretch, going 6-of-6 from the line while keeping Coe scoreless. Bennett Sherry scored a game-high 26 points in the loss and recorded his second-straight double-double, pulling down 10 rebounds. Cooper Nailor (15) Cole Hrubes (13) concluded the double-digit scoring for Coe while John Steffen tied a career-high with 14 rebounds.

  • Dubuque controlled the opening few minutes, getting back-to-back buckets to begin the half including a dunk to go up 4-0. Coe took control around the 14-minute mark, ripping off a 13-2 run to flip the score and take an 18-9 lead. Five Kohawks scored during the run with Sherry sparking the run with a pair of baskets inside the paint. Dubuque put together its own run in the following four-plus minutes, scoring 12 of 15 points to tie things up at 21-21. The squads went toe-to-toe over the closing minutes but Coe had a strong final minute, getting six unanswered points to pull ahead 36-31 at the break. Coe's lead grew to star the second half, scoring five points to begin the period as Ryan Dolphin hit a 3 to make it 41-31. Dubuque got back into the game with a dominant stretch, outscoring Coe 24-12 to take a 55-53 lead midway through the half. The run continued for the hosts, scoring nine unanswered points in the next 2:44 to push the lead to 64-53 with just under eight minutes to play. The Kohawks fought back with a 16-7 spurt before the 1:30 mark, pulling to within two of the lead at 71-69. Dubuque sealed the victory at the free throw line in the final moments, going 6-of-6 while Coe was 0-for-2 from the floor with one turnover.
