PLATTEVILLE, Wisc. — The Coe College men's basketball team picked up a huge upset victory on the road Friday evening, defeating the no. 18 University of Wisconsin Platteville Pioneers 71-68. The game was back-and-forth from the opening whistle with the lead changing hands 15 times throughout the evenly matched contest. Coe and UW-Platteville each scored 29 points in the opening half, exchanging mini spurts but a layup from
Cooper Nailor at the end of the period sent the game to break level. The Kohawks took a four-point lead near the midway mark of the second half after a 12-6 spurt, seeing
Cole Hrubes knock down a pair of 3s to start the run before buckets from
Jackson Bowman and
Ryan Dolphin made it 48-44. Platteville tied the score at 57 with 4:34 left in the game but another spurt from Coe put the visitors ahead for good as the Kohawks scored eight of the next 11 points to go up 65-60 with 1:59 to play. The Pioneers continued to fight, slicing the deficit to one point at 69-68 but a missed attempt at a go-ahead jumper fell short for the hosts as Coe managed to hang on for the ranked victory. Hrubes and Nailor paced Coe's offense in the victory, scoring 19 points each while
Jackson Bowman hit double-digits with 12 points. Nailor filled the stat sheet outside of his team-leading point total, finishing with eight assists, seven rebounds and two steals in 39 minutes of action.
Kanyon Bryte and
Ryan Dolphin made a big impact off the bench with nine and eight points respectively.

- The opening moments of the game were back-and-forth with Coe taking a 5-4 lead after a floater from Nailor. Coe used a five-point stretch to establish a multi-possession lead at the 12-minute mark, getting a 3 from Nailor before a pair of free throws from Bowman made it 10-6. Platteville slowly climbed back in front over the next 5:30, outscoring Coe 13-8 as the hosts hit six of their next nine shots to grab a 19-18 lead. The squads traded blows over the final minutes of the half, each hitting three field goals but a buzzer-beating layup from Nailor leveled the score at 29 at the break. There was more seesawing action between the teams to begin the second half but back-to-back 3s from Hrubes gave Coe a 42-38 lead with 13:38 to play. Platteville and Coe continued to battle back-and-forth with the Pioneers leveling the game at 57 at the 4:30 mark of the half. Coe regained control over the next two-plus minutes, scoring eight of the next 11 points as a run capped by a Bowman layup made it 65-60 with 1:59 to play. Platteville fought back in the closing minute, knocking down a 3 before a layup made it a one-point game at 69-68. The Pioneers forced a turnover on the ensuing possession and had a chance to take the lead but the shot attempt fell short, giving Coe a chance to grab the rebound and seal the victory at the line.
