Baseball takes two from UD to claim season series victory

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College baseball team won a pair of games at Bill Quinby Field on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Spartans 4-3 in game one and 8-6 in game two. Coe took an early lead in the opening game and rode the left arm of Nolan Schroeder who earned his second win of the season, tossing 6.1 innings while allowing three hits and three runs with six strikeouts. Ryan Thoreson and Will Hosch combined to give Schroeder an early 3-0 lead which was later made 4-1 on another RBI single from Hosch. UD got a pair of runs back in the seventh but Xander Cloudy came in and bridged the gap to Jack Walsh who picked up his first save of the season with just 10 pitches in the ninth. Coe's offense bashed out 17 hits in game two en route to the doubleheader sweep, taking an early lead with three runs in the first inning yet again. UD closed the gap and got within one of Coe's lead at 5-4 in the fifth but a pair of runs in the sixth and a solo homer from Ryan Brosius in the seventh gave the hosts an 8-4 lead. UD cut the deficit to two with a two-run homer in the eighth but Xander Cloudy and Ethan O'Donnell combined to finish off the game with the final six outs. Evan Bender picked up his first win of the season, pitching two scoreless innings in relief with a pair of strikeouts.

GAME ONE
COE 4 - UD 3
Game Facts
  • Coe's offense struck early, scoring three times in the opening inning, getting a pair of leadoff runners as Wille and Brosius reached on a single and a walk. Thoreson drove home both runners two batters later, making it 2-0 with a single through the left side. Hosch picked up the final RBI of the opening inning, driving home Tyce Johnson with an RBI groundout. UD pulled one back a few innings later, slicing the Kohawk lead to just two with a two-out, run-scoring single as Schroeder surrendered the opening run for the Spartans. Allison led off with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth for Coe and was quickly driven in with Hosch delivering the eventual game-winning run on a single to left. UD made things interesting in the top of the seventh, scoring twice with an RBI double and a sacrifice fly but Cloudy got back-to-back batters to end any further threat. Cloudy got a clutch double play to end a small threat in the top of the eighth and then handed to Walsh who needed some help from his defense to shut the door as Hosh and Jack Allison combined to throw out the game-tying run at the plate to end the game.

GAME TWO

  • The Kohawk offense made it happen early again in game two, scoring three times with RBI from Allison and Hosch and a double steal that sent Thoreson home. UD got a pair of runs back in the third, using a pair of two-out singles to cut the lead to just one. Hosch came through again for Coe in the bottom of the third, driving home two runs with a bases-loaded single to make it 5-2. The Spartans got back in the game in the top of the fifth, scoring twice with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to put pressure back on the Kohawks. Jon Wille and Allison restored Coe's multi-run lead in the bottom of the sixth, driving home a run each with singles to make it 7-4. Ryan Brosius then delivered his second solo homer of the season against the Spartans, launching a homer over the left-field fence for 8-4. UD quickly got back in the game with a long shot of their own, slicing the lead in half just two batters into the eighth. Cloudy came in for his second appearance of the day and steadied the ship, getting three straight hitters including back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning. Cloudy turned it over to O'Donnell after a leadoff walk in the eighth and the Kohawk senior didn't disappoint, getting a double play before ending the game with a flyout to center.
