Osterman, Cloudy shine in game one; Thoreson’s ninth-inning heroics seal Baseball’s doubleheader sweep at Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa – The Coe College baseball team picked up its second conference doubleheader sweep of season Wednesday afternoon at Simpson, defeating the Storm 4-3 in a pair of A-R-C matchups. Coe rode the backs of Drew Osterman and Xander Cloudy in game one as the duo were dominant, allowing just eight hits and three runs. Osterman got the start and hung tough throughout the game, striking out six hitters while working out of a bases-loaded jam in the fifth to keep the Kohawks in front. Cloudy entered in the sixth and finished the game, scattering four hits in four scoreless frames. Jake Brosius, Will Hosch and Ryan Brosius had RBI in the win for the offense while CJ Johnson scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the fourth. Coe's offense, which had 10 hits in game one, followed with 11 hits in game two but 12 runners left on base made things difficult for the offense. Nolan Schroeder pitched five strong innings to start, striking out seven batters while allowing just four hits and two runs as Simpson took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Kohawks responded and tied the game in the seventh with an RBI from Hosch but Simpson regained the lead in the seventh with a two-out double. Coe trailed 4-3 in the top of the ninth and found the heroic moments, getting a leadoff runner on an error before a wild pitch and another error tied it at three. Ryan Thoreson made the Storm pay for the mistakes later in the frame and gave Coe the lead for the first time in the game, driving home Anthony Ranallo on a two-out single. Brady Alexander, who entered the game in the seventh, remained for the final inning and worked a flawless 1, 2, 3 frame to end the game.

Game Facts
  • Coe scored twice in the opening frame, getting a sacrifice fly from Brosius and a clutch two-out single from Hosch to make it 2-0. Simpson quickly responded with two in the home half of the inning, scoring two batters in after a double and a single before later tying it with a two-out single. Simpson took its first lead in the bottom of the third inning, using a one-out, solo homer for a 3-2 advantage. Coe's offense wasted no time in answering, getting two runs in the top of the fourth to regain the lead which it held for the remainder of the contest. Thoreson opened with a triple and was later brought home on an RBI single from Ryan Brosius. CJ Johnson later came around to score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch as Coe used small ball and the Simpson mistake to go in front. Osterman shut the door in the fourth inning but ran into trouble in the fifth, stranding the bases loaded after hitting two batters and walking a third. Cloudy entered for Osterman in the sixth and completed the remainder of the game, scattering four hits while striking out four batters for his second save of the season.

COE 4 - SIMPSON 3
Game Facts
  • Coe left runners on base in the opening six innings before surrendering the lead in the bottom of the sixth. The Storm finally cashed in, using a leadoff walk and back-to-back singles to go ahead 2-0. The Kohawk offense finally struck in the top of the seventh, pulling back the momentum with two runs on one play as Hosch drove home Jon Wille on an infield single. Eckardt also scored on the play, scampering home from second after an attempted throw to get Hosch at first. Simpson seesawed the game back into its favor in the bottom of the seventh, getting a two-out RBI double for the 3-2 advantage. Down to its final chance, Coe's offense came up clutch. The error allowed Eckardt to reach to leadoff before Preston Hollins pinch ran and moved to second on a wild pitch. Another error allowed Wille to reach and Hollins to score in the next phase, tying the game at three with no outs. Thoreson found the go-ahead hit after a strikeout and fielder's choice, driving home Ranallo with a single down the left-field line. Alexander went back to the bump after retiring four straight batters and remained in control, eliminating all three Simpson hitters he faced in the bottom of the inning to lock up the victory.
