CHICAGO, Ill. – The Coe College women's tennis team dropped its NCAA tournament opener Thursday afternoon to no. 55 North Central College, falling 4-2 to the Cardinals at the Stagg Tennis Courts on the University of Chicago campus. The Kohawk women battled from the opening match, suffering a pair of 6-1 defeats in the doubles competition as the opponents went up 1-0 before singles. Coe's first point of the match came at number three with
Maddie Schultz tying the match at one with a 6-2, 6-3 straight sets win over her opponent. NCC responded with back-to-back victories at number one and four, going one point from victory as the opposition took a 3-1 lead.
Maria Bello Escobar got Coe right back into the match with a come from behind win at the number six spot, taking out her opponent 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 to make it 3-2. The remaining two matches had each been sent into a third and deciding set as
Addison Leasure and
Alli Hagness both claimed second-set wins to force the decider but a 6-4 decision for the Cardinals at the number two spot clinched the victory.
