Newell’s career-high 17 points leads Men’s Basketball past Wartburg

WAVERLY, Iowa — The Coe College men's basketball team picked up an American Rivers Conference victory Saturday afternoon on the road, defeating the Wartburg College Knights 62-55. The Kohawk men started early, opening up a 12-1 lead in the first seven minutes of the first half. Wartburg clawed back into the game before the end of the first, closing the period on a 15-8 run to make it a three-point lead for Coe at 30-27. The Kohawks slowly pushed the lead early in the second half but Wartburg had an answer, using a 10-3 advantage to even the score at 44. Kanyon Bryte took over for the Kohawks in the next 3:24, leading a 10-5 run for his team, scoring six points along the way to push the advantage to 54-49. Bryte and Cooper Nailor finished off the victory later in the half, scoring back-to-back buckets with Nailor cashing in a huge 3 for a 59-51 lead. Wartburg got the next two buckets to pull within four but key free throws and solid defense from the Kohawks ensured the victory. Jackson Newell scored a career-high 17 points to lead Coe in the victory, tallying 12 in the opening 20 minutes. Nailor (12), Ryan Dolphin (11) and Bryte (11) points were the other Kohawks to hit double-digits while Bryte recorded a double-double, pulling down 14 boards.

  • Newell got things started early, scoring the game's first five points including a 3 to start the contest. Wartburg slowly worked itself into the game, outscoring Coe 16-10 over the next 6:19 to pull within five of the lead at 22-17. Jay Akin and Nailor combined to rip off a five-point string for Coe but Wartburg responded with 10 of the next 11 points to make it 28-27 Kohawks. Newell finished the half with yet another bucket, making it 12 first-half points with a layup before the end of the period. Dolphin knocked down two 3s to help start the second half for the Kohawks, pushing the lead to seven at 37-30. The Knights controlled the next phase, using a 14-7 run to level the game at 44 with 8:46 to play. Coe closed well, regaining a comfortable lead with a 15-7 stretch in just over five minutes. Bryte led the run for Coe, scoring eight points during the game-changing phase. Wartburg managed to cut the lead back to four with back-to-back buckets in the final two minutes but clutch free throws from Nailor and Dolphin paired with solid defense from Coe sealed the win.
